Giveaway of The Cradle by Patrick Somerville

The Cradle
by Patrick Somerville

Early one summer morning, Matthew Bishop kisses his still-sleeping wife Marissa, gets dressed and eases his truck through Milwaukee, bound for the highway. His wife, pregnant with their first child, has asked him to find the antique cradle taken years before by her mother Caroline when she abandoned Marissa, never to contact her daughter again. Soon to be a mother herself, Marissa now dreams of nothing else but bringing her baby home to the cradle she herself slept in. His wife does not know-does not want to know-where her mother lives, but Matt has an address for Caroline's sister near by and with any luck, he will be home in time for dinner.

Only as Matt tries to track down his wife's mother, he discovers that Caroline, upon leaving Marissa, has led a life increasingly plagued by impulse and irrationality, a mysterious life that grows more inexplicable with each new lead Matt gains, and door he enters. As hours turn into days and Caroline's trail takes Matt from Wisconsin to Minnesota, Illinois, and beyond in search of the cradle, Matt makes a discovery that will forever change Marissa's life, and faces a decision that will challenge everything he has ever known.

Elegant and astonishing, Patrick Somerville tells the story of one man's journey into the heart of marriage, parenthood, and what it means to be a family. Confirming the arrival of an exuberantly talented new writer, THE CRADLE is an uniquely imaginative debut novel that radiates with wisdom and wonder.

  1. I used a bassinet that my mother had used when I brought my babies home. All the babies in my family have used it. I think this book sounds good. I would love a chance to win a copy.

  3. I really wanted to have a gown smocked for mine to wear home from the hospital. I remember the first did, but can't remember the second. I also wanted my son to not have the chickenpox when his sister was born so he could come to the hospital to bring her home, but that was not to be.

  6. I wasn't fortunate to have children of my own, but I would have wanted the baby quilt that my grandmother made for me. She made each one of her grandchildren a quilt of the softest flannel, a cute print on one side and a matching solid color on the other side. Mine is pale butter yellow with little baby lions.

  16. When my daughter was born 46 yrs ago I was terrified. I did not know how to care for a baby and my wonderful Mother-in-law taught me what to do. We stayed with my in-laws for 2 weeks so by the time I got home I was not afraid to bath her or feed her. She was so beautiful, full head of long black curley hair (1st hair cut at 2 wks)not red or wrinkled just perfect. I named her Starr and she is still my Starr.

  21. Well, I've only got one daughter, and what I wished for when she was born was for her daddy to be there. He wasn't! He worked on a towboat at the time and was in Ohio! Fortunately, they got him off the boat and home late the next day!!

  57. I just wanted to have my mom stay with me for a few days when I first came home with my daughter. My dad would not let her. Then I asked my grandmother, and my dad got made at me for asking too much of my older grandmother. He finally let my mom stay with me for a few days. It was so wonderful sharing this special time with her - the three generations of girls.

  62. I really wanted a nice baby bed but I had the one I had been raised in. There was a epidemic of some kind the moquitos brought and the Public Health Offices made bed that had screemed in top and sides and my great-aunt got me one. It was hauled out of the barn and used for my first born. It made him look caged in but was really handy because you could roll it out on the front porch and let him get fresh air without standing over him. Nothing could get to him and he couldn't get out. By the second baby, I had a real crib just like I wanted. ybutler@oppcatv.com
