Book Review and Giveaway: Twisted by KayCee R

twistedTitle: Twisted
Author: KayCee R

About the book: Cayden Rivers wants nothing more than to be normal, but we don’t always get what we want. For years he has been hiding a secret, afraid of being labeled a “freak”. Every day he goes to school, plays football, spends time with his girlfriend, and helps carry his drunken adopted father to bed. Nobody knows the truth about his unnatural speed and strength, including his life-long friend Camilla.

Suddenly, four strangers enter Cayden’s life, and not only do they know his secret, they also have one of their own. With their help, Cayden discovers there is more to his power, something much more dangerous. Something other people will kill to possess.

Camilla wishes her parents were around more. She gets lonely sleeping in her big empty house night after night. Sure, she has all the money she could ever need, but the only person who is there for her is Cayden. He has his own family and a girlfriend who takes up most of his time, so Camilla knows he won’t be there for her forever, and recently he’s been acting really strange.

Will Cayden be able to keep his secret and his friendship with Camilla, or will his new found power destroy everything, including his own life?

Switching between Cayden and Camilla's point of view, Twisted will leave you aching for more.

My thoughts: I must admit that to me this book started out kind of slow.  I nearly put it down as I didn't think I was going to be able to stick with it.  But I did and am glad.  Once it picked up I became invested in the characters a bit more.

Cayden seemed like a sweetheart, even though I think he was a little dense when it came to his love life.  He did seem to mature in other ways during the course of the story though.  He went from having to keep the largest part of his life a secret to being able to share it with his family and close friend. Along the way though he finds family he never knew he had as well as discovers new powers.  He finds out that he may have enemies because of these powers, so it is even more important to keep them hidden.

I liked the relationship between Cayden and Camilla.  The strong friendship and how they are both fighting feelings for each other that run deeper.

Even with the slow start, the book picked up and once rolling along kept up the speed.  I would probably pick up the second book in the series as there is still a lot about Cayden and his family that remains a mystery.

Book Review and Giveaway: Big Numbers by Jack Getze

Big Numbers
(Austin Carr Mystery)
by Jack Getze

Root for divorced dad Austin Carr, a funny, oversexed scamp who'll use anything and everything to get his kids back. Think Bugs Bunny with guns and a penis.

Divorced dad Austin Carr wakes up every day in a beat-up camper, parked on someone else’s private property. Why? Because his alimony and child support payments were established by New Jersey’s family court system when his income was double, and for the last two years he has failed to earn the legally mandated monthly nut. He’s had his savings drained, his Maxima repossessed, his salary attached, and his visiting rights suspended. He bought the twelve-year-old Chevy pick-up with the rusty camper for $800 last month because another landlord tossed his butt in the street. Will stretching the rules, his own morals, and the boundaries of common sense raise the cash needed to get his kids back? Or will his bad behavior set him up for a nasty double-cross? Find out if Austin can redeem himself and win back his children.

My thoughts:  This book is marketed as a cozy mystery, and while those books have their fair share of humor, this one tops them all.  You know the saying "If it wasn't for Bad Luck, I'd have no Luck at all?"  Well that sums up Austin Carr.  His income has tanked, he has lost most of his material possessions because of it.  He lives in a rusty camper and can't see his kids - which is what he wants more than anything.  When the story starts out you think this is just a deadbeat dad, sort of homeless, alcoholic.  But, in spite of all that he has a heart that makes you love him - you just can't help it!

This is a very quick moving book, with lots of twists as a mystery should have - but it will definitely keep you laughing!  I found it very entertaining, quick to read, and though it is a mystery - it also has a light hearted feel to it.  It is a fun book to the beginning of a new series.  Can't wait to see what other troubles Austin will get in to!

Blog Tour, Review and Giveaway: The Pitcher by William Hazelgrove

pitcherTitle: The Pitcher
Author: William Hazelgrove

About the book: A boy with a golden arm but no money for lessons. A mother who wants to give her son his dream before she dies. A broken down World Series pitcher who cannot go on after the death of his wife. These are the elements of The Pitcher. A story of a man at the end of his dream and a boy whose dream is to make his high school baseball team. In the tradition of The Natural and The Field of Dreams, this is a mythic story about how a man and a boy meet in the crossroads of their life and find a way to go on. You will laugh and you will cry as The Pitcher and Ricky prepare for the ultimate try out of life.

Purchase Links:

My Thoughts: This is one of the best books that I have read in quite awhile.  Touching in its simplicity, yet full of emotion.  A boy's love for baseball; a mother's love for her son; a man's love for his deceased wife.  These all fill the story with meaning and bring about the choices each makes.  Choices that intertwine their lives with unbreakable bonds.

I love the way the author drew me into the lives of Ricky and his mother Maria.  You feel Maria's struggle of trying to raise her boy as a single mom with an ex who shows up to steal from them and abuse them.  To add to her struggles, she has lupus and has lost her health insurance so refuses to go back to the doctor until she can pay the thousands in bills that she has racked up.  Ricky has struggles of his own.  Dyslexia has dogged him in school as has his Mexican heritage.  "Beano" and "Wetback" are names he hears often on and off the baseball field.

Together they convince, entice, coerce their next door neighbor into coaching Ricky with his pitching.  This neighbor just happens to be an old MLB pitcher who won a World Series in the 1970's.  He has been living in his garage for years, drinking Good Times beer, chewing Skoal and watching baseball on TV.  His life basically ended when his wife died.  He has been unable to move forward and has accepted his existence as a washed-up, drunk ex-MLB Pitcher.

Apart, their lives are stagnant, but together, they combine into a sometimes chaotic, sometimes heartbreaking, but altogether joyful life.

Book Tour and Review: The Eggstone Murders by Herb Smith

Title: The Eggstone Murders
Author: Herb Smith
Cozy Mystery

About the book: A thick-headed sheriff, a young, unsure, wannabe detective, and a savvy older criminal-turned-investigator, are only the beginning of the cast of characters included in this story of small-town life in southwestern Iowa, set in 1952.

Enjoy the storms, the intrigues and the mid-western hospitality – including the wonderful food – of Hillville, Iowa as its down-to-earth folks work their way through the dailyness of their quiet lives.  There are the murders, of course, which cause dismay, but the con-man turned detective, Guy, is able to resolve them after a few bumps, and the guilty are punished – or, as is sometimes Guy’s choice, forgiven.

As a whole, it’s a pleasant outing on an Iowa summer’s day.

My thoughts: I read this book in two sittings and it definitely fits the Cozy Mystery genre.  My first thought when reading it, was it reminded me a little of Agatha Christie - now keep in mind, I have only read And Then There Were None, so that is what I am comparing it to!

It has a fairly large cast of characters, the first being Guy LaFevre.  This is not his real name, as he spent time in prison and upon getting out created a new identity for himself.  He then embezzled money from a company that was doing it's own embezzling and disappeared again before they were on to him.  So now he is Guy and living in a boarding house in Iowa.  He becomes friends with Caleb, a taxi driver who wants to be a detective.  Together they start an agency and before long are called in to go over the books at Eggstone Farms. Gordon Eggstone thinks someone is embezzling from him.  They do find a curious entry, but it is explained away.  Guy thinks there is more to it, but before they can explore it someone is murdered on the farm.

Things get convoluted from there with the Sheriff asking for their help, but he may be involved with some of the suspects in ways that he doesn't want to come out.  Before it is over, the murders do get solved, and Guy does some creative justice of his own.

This was a nice change from the books that I usually read.  It doesn't have a lot of action, but there is a lot of studying human nature and just watching for things out of the ordinary.  If you like cozy mysteries, then definitely give this one a try.

About the author: It has been my good fortune to live and work in schools and universities around the world. I started teaching in the California State University system more than thirty years ago, after a time working in secondary schools;  went on to Egypt and the Middle East, and finally to Argentina. It has been a fascinating series of events, from one adventure to another, and I loved nearly every minute of it.  (A few of the minutes were not quite so lovable for various reasons.)
Life as an expat lecturer and instructor led me into some unique and sometimes difficult situations, but my appraisal of the whole is one of  amazement that I was able to get to so many wonderful places and enjoy the life of the people there.  I taught English courses to students who had already developed strong skills in the language and was always happy to tell them about life in the U.S., as well as my appreciation of the life I led in their home countries.  I would gladly do it all again with only slight changes here and there.
A sustaining hobby throughout my life is music.  I am a pianist, organist, and composer with many years of experience in church music.  I found that wherever I went in the world, with the exception of Argentina, I was almost immediately working with a church, playing the services (usually on Fridays in the Middle East) regularly.  Music is one of my fondest dreams as well as a ‘forever’ joy.
I now live in Oregon with my wife of fifty years, Glenda, and we love the beauties that surround us here.  I will never tire of reliving the past, of course, either through writing or actually traveling, and any time I have an opportunity to return to Cairo or Doha or La Rioja, I am excited to go once again. Book Review: Tempted in the Tropics by Tracy March

Title: Tempted in the Tropics
Author: Tracy March
Publisher: Entangled Bliss

About the book: The only thing they agree on is the sultry heat between them.

Nothing’s more important to Paige Ellerbee than her struggling bakery, Sweet Bee’s. When Lane Anderson, the temporary new doctor hot enough to rival McDreamy, moves in next door, though, she’s sure things are looking up. Until he threatens her business in their first conversation.

Lane just wants to practice medicine responsibly—not argue with the flighty bakery owner next door. But when he finds himself traveling down to the Caribbean to play guitar for Paige’s best friend’s wedding, suddenly the sight of the blonde in a bikini eclipses the fact they can’t agree on anything. And as their vacation romance grows, his reservations about starting something after getting burned by love are washed away like sand on the beach.

But once Paige and Lane land back home, will these polar opposites be able to forgive their feud and find lasting love?

Purchase Links:

My thoughts: I found this book to be a fun, sweet read.  I instantly liked Paige.  She was young, energetic, with a big heart - but very independent and not afraid to speak her mind.  I think the pink streak in her hair showed that she was a little rebellious and not afraid to have a little fun.  Because she was living in a town with mostly retired folks, she liked to liven things up a little.

She fits in well in the community, having moved back home to help take care of her mother, who has recently died of cancer.  She took over Sweet Bee's bakery and has made a go of it with the help of the town doctor.  He lets her know his patient's needs and she bakes up goodies that stick with their dietary limitations.  It's a win-win-win.  She gets business, patients get to eat goodies, and they get healthier.  Until said doc goes on a month long vacation and leaves his nephew, Lane, to run his practice.  He doesn't share with him the "partnership" he has with Paige and will not honor it.

See, Lane was recently burned by his ex-partner/ex-fiance when it was discovered that she was prescribing medicine that wasn't needed.  He was found guilty by association.  So, even though Paige and his uncle have covered things technically, he doesn't even want to come close to anything that might look illegal.  He might disagree with Paige over this, but the air around them crackles whenever the two of them are in the same room.  When they end up on a tropical island for a friend's wedding, they decide to put their differences aside and see where it takes them.

I liked the way the author created the sexual tension and situations, without being really graphic about it.  She also writes with a great sense of humor - with I find necessary with any romance!  This is the second book in the series, and I didn't have the pleasure of reading the first one.  I do not think this detracted from this book at all though and would recommend this to anyone looking for a light, fun, romantic read!

My thoughts: This is my fifth book that I have read and reviewed on Books and Needlepoint by Dan Walsh.  (You can find all my reviews here. ) I continue to be touched and renewed while reading his books.  This latest, the second in the Restoration Series is no exception.  I would recommend reading The Dance first though as you get some background information that not knowing won't detract from the story, but I felt it gave me a better understanding of the family dynamics.

I enjoy these books because the foundation for the restoration is based in God's love and forgiveness.  This is portrayed though, without being preachy and in-your-face.  It is simply a story, that could be anyone's story, about things that disrupt a marriage, a family, and the importance of communication and prayer. These books have touched me on a deeper level the last couple of years as my family has faced some trials where communication and understanding have played a very big role.  For awhile the communication was lost and it is just coming back to the level where it used to be.  The difference that it has made in our marriage and in our family is tremendous.

So, whether or not your family is whole, struggling, on the brink of disaster - I am sure that you will take something away with you after reading them.

Review and Giveaway: In the Shadow of Revenge by Patricia Hale

Title: In the Shadow of Revenge
Author: Patricia Hale
Publisher: Carina Press

About the book: Everybody thought brilliant Cecily would leave dead-end Miller's Falls for something better. But a two-decades-old tragedy locks her in place. Few understand the fierce bond that Cecily and Amelia share with Hilary, who was assaulted one summer as the two other girls watched helplessly. It's a bond of love and guilt… and a desire for vengeance that cuts clear to the bone.

So Assistant DA Cecily Minos waits, eager to see the guy in her courtroom. When Amelia meets a man who has the tattoo the girls remember seeing that day, they think they've finally caught a break. But the police refuse to reopen the case, and it's up to Cecily and Amelia to pursue their suspect.

Their investigation soon uncovers secrets best left buried. But the law is slow, and they've waited long enough for revenge….

Purchase Links:

My thoughts:  For a first book for Patricia Hale, this one was very good!  I can't wait to see what she will write in the future.  I liked the bond between Cecily, Hillary and Amelia, and given what they have gone through, it is very understandable and believable.  Something like that either tears you apart or brings you together forever.

The story unfolds with us learning more and more about the girls' childhoods and the women they have become today.  You learn how they each have developed coping mechanisms to get them past the memories that haunt them. Cecily seems to bear the most guilt and it is linked to a Ouiji board that they had played with as children.  She has a link to the board which she is sure comes from her deceased Grandmother.  She feels that the answers that she has been given through the board may have been guidance from her Grandmother all along.

The more involved Cecily becomes in the investigation concerning the assault from 18 years before, the more danger she finds herself in, and the more muddy the lines between being loyal to friends or being loyal to family become.

Again, loved this book - and I loved the touch of paranormal that was thrown in!

Excerpt from In the Shadow of Revenge:

My lungs were tight as fists and the voice inside my head said run, but my legs couldn’t be trusted. Standing up wouldn’t have gotten me out of there, it would only have drawn attention to the pee that was warm in my shorts and it might have gotten Hilary killed if he was serious about running that blade across her neck.

All of a sudden the man stood and keeping his back to us, lowered the kerchief and put a cigarette in his mouth. Hilary never moved though I saw her blink. She was looking at something far away like she was somewhere else entirely and I hoped that that was true so she wouldn’t have to know what happened. He pulled his baseball hat low over his face the same way it’d been when we first climbed into the railcar and without ever looking at us he jumped to the ground and walked away.

“Stay here,” I’d told Amelia, though I knew she wasn’t going anywhere. And I ran. I ran faster than I’d ever run not even caring about the pee burning the inside of my legs. I’d taken the woods instead of the path, running in the opposite direction from the way he’d gone. My legs were scraped and bleeding by the time I’d reached the road and the stitch in my side had made it almost impossible to breath, but I just kept thinking of Hilary laying there and I couldn’t stop until I was pulling open my own back door. I ran into the kitchen and through the house until I found my mother kneeling beside her bed, rosary beads draped around her prayerful hands like a spider web. I stood in the doorway and looked at her, imagined wrapping my arms around her neck and her drawing me in, holding me. I imagined feeling safe. She glanced at me standing there then dismissed me with a nod of her head, knee deep in Jesus. I turned and ran for the telephone.

The Beast by Faye Kellerman (Review and Giveaway)

The Beast

by Faye Kellerman

on Tour August 2013

Title: The Beast
Author: Faye Kellerman
Publisher: HarperCollins/William Morrow
Mystery, Thriller

About the book: Over his years with the LAPD, Peter Decker has handled a number of tough cases and strange killers. Few of his previous assignments compare to his latest case—the most bizarre of his storied career.

When Hobart Penny is found dead in his apartment, the cops think that his pet cat—an adult female tiger—attacked the reclusive elderly billionaire. But it soon becomes clear that the beast that killed the eccentric inventor is all too human. Digging into the victim’s life, Decker and his colleagues, Detectives Marge Dunn and Scott Oliver, discover that Penny was an exceptionally peculiar man with exotic tastes, including kinky sex with call girls.

Following a trail of clues that leads from a wildlife sanctuary in the San Bernardino Mountains to the wild nightlife of Las Vegas, the LAPD detectives are left juggling too many suspects and too few answers. To break open a case involving the two most primal instincts—sex and murder—Decker wrestles with a difficult choice: turning to a man with expert knowledge of both—Chris Donatti, the dangerous man who also happens to be the father of Decker’s foster son Gabriel Whitman, a boy not without his own problems.
As their work and intimate worlds collide, Decker and his wife, Rina, find themselves facing tough questions. It just might be that family crises and work-related responsibilities prove too much for Decker’s career. A confluence of ordeals can stress even the most intact of families. And when all these shocking truths comes out, exactly how well will Decker and Rina cope as well as survive?

Purchase Links:

My Thoughts:  This is the 21st book that Faye Kellerman has written involving Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus.  The main storyline, the murder of Hobart Penny is very readable and understandable without having read any of the previous books.  I do feel that the sub plots - like with Gabe, their foster son, and his girlfriend Yasmine, lost some of the meaning without knowing the background.  However, I liked this book so much that there is a very good chance that I will go back and read the series!

I really like the author's writing style.  It was just very laid back and easy to read.  Mr. Penny was so strange that I couldn't wait to see what they would turn up next in their investigation of his murder.  Despite his eccentricities though, the motive for his murder wasn't clear to me until the end - as a good mystery should be.

I am looking forward to going back into the series and finding out more about Peter and Rina and the detectives Marge and Oliver.  I really want to find out more about Gabe and the big trauma that happened with him and Yasmine.  With just this little peek in their lives I found these characters to be very believable and likeable.  The detectives had an easy camaraderie, and Peter and Rina seem very comfortable in their relationship.  The conflict in the storyline is with the murder and everything that surrounded Hobart Penny.  (Ok, and a little bit with Gabe and Yasmine, but that wasn't central to the story).
