The moment we stepped inside, we were in yet another world. The sound of pinging slot machines, the smells of air-conditioning and sweat, the flashing lights above the pits: it was total sensory overload. (p92, First Love by James Patterson)

Something jingled -- probably jewelry -- and her long, curly gray hair hung in a loose ponytail, tied midway with a loopy piece of purple cloth.  Her feet shuffled along the wood floor, not bare today -- but wearing sandals in mid-November?  (The Christmas Shoppe, p81 by Melody Carlson)

Whatever this virus had done to humanity, the alchemists had found a way to undo it in him.  The chaos of emotions had come roiling back into veins and neurons too tepid to house their fire, and Saric wasn't sure if he wanted to kill the alchemists or thank them for it.  (p23, Forbidden by Ted Dekker and Tosca Lee)

Despite all their creativity, teachers and staff were so busy taking care of moment-to-moment tasks like supervision and student discipline that they couldn't take care of chronic issues like fixing the curriculum skills class, coming up with a system to track detention time, or figuring out which teachers were floundering worse than others.  Professional development sessions were planned and pulled together in a rush at the last minute. But then I see Alex and Julie together, talking quietly, playing chess, and I know that if people had seen Matt with Jon or me, pre-Syl Matt, that is, they would have fallen in love with us the way Dad has with Alex and Julie.  If it had been Matt and Jon and me and we didn't have any parents, any family except each other, and people had reached out, included us in their families, it would have meant everything to us. A cutlass was suddenly a required accessory, and one could not stroll the Retail Embankment nor row down Marleybone High Causeway without hearing the squawk of parrots chattering on the shoulders of kerchiefed beaux. Games of chance and aquatic amusements such as the sea-lion rodeo were less and less in favour, replaced by sword fights, in which the men of the Station tested their mettle--though to come into combat with actual pirates would be the furthest thing from anyone's imagining.
