The Demon Side Series by Heaven Liegh Eldeen (Review and Interview)

My thoughts:  I had the opportunity to read both of these books back to back, so I am going to give you my thoughts on the two of them together.  You can read on down for more individual information and excerpts from each book.

I actually liked The Demon Side, Book One better than The Human Side, Book Two.  In The Demon Side, we meet the demon, Rahovart the Heir, who has been living in this house, or I should say, whatever dwelling was on this property, for centuries.  He cannot remember much of anything prior to waking up on the banks of a river, close to where he now resides.  He has spent his existence tormenting whomever happens to be the latest tenants.

Then he meets Etta.  She seems like a harmless teenage girl, and he thinks it will be easy to get the latest family to leave -- that is, until Etta actually speaks to him and tells him to please get out of her way.  Whhaaattt??  She can see him?   Where Rahovart was interested in getting them to leave before, now he wants to get to know her better and learn why she can see him!

I am not sure why this book appealed to me more than book two did.  Maybe because it was sort of like a Beauty and the Beast beginning?  I thought that Book 2 would be Etta's perspective, but it turns out that Rahovart gets sent back to earth as a human to try to get Etta to remember the feelings that they had for each other.

They were both quick reads but I did get a little confused at times with the different hierarchies in the demon and angel worlds.  That soon sorted itself out though.  I am wondering if there is going to be a third book called The Angel Side?

~I received complimentary eCopies of both books from Sizzling PR in exchange for my unbiased review.~

Title: The Demon Side (Book one of The Demon Side Series)
Author:  Heaven Liegh Eldeen
Publisher: Decadent Publishing

About the Book: When worlds collide… Every kid has problems. Every kid has even more problems when they move to a new home. But when a kid with problems moves to a new home that has a Demon living inside it—look out!

Etta’s world is about to spin out of control when she encounters her new roommate—and Rahovart, that ancient trickster, is in for a few surprises too. So don’t mind all the crashing and rumbling; that’s just the normal noise Angels and Demons make when they’re fighting an epic war in the attic.

One thing’s for sure: Etta and Rahovart will have to go through Hell to Heaven and back again before that old Victorian home in Quantico Town finally quiets down…

Excerpt from The Demon Side:
Etta plopped back onto her bed and stared at the ceiling for a few moments. I wished I could hear her thoughts. Her father had just admitted to being a murderer for all practical purposes, though that was not how I viewed him. I truly believed John only tried to save the village, but his fervor and some help from a desperate Alastor, turned what should have been a heroic act into a bloodbath. Many men have unknowingly fallen from grace in the name of the greater good. Now, hopefully Etta would see that her father was just the victim of blurred lines between good and evil.

“What are you thinking?” I asked as I lay down next to her on the bed.

“Can a person still go to Heaven even if they’ve killed someone?”

“Well, I’m not in the business of getting people to Heaven, Etta. That’s the last place I want them to go,” I reluctantly replied.

“Even if it were me?” Etta stared hard at me with watery eyes, looking right into my blackened soul. I never gave much thought to where her soul would go, except to stop her from mistakenly giving it to me.

“That is a choice for you to make. I can’t force you to choose a side. I can only put the temptations in front of you.”

“You didn’t answer my question.”

“What do you want me to say? I want to see you burn in the depths of Hell? You’ll never hear that from me. Only you and your actions can decide where you go when you leave this world.”

“I would go if it meant I could be with you, you know.”

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.” As much as I would have loved for that to be the case, her comment angered me. I couldn’t imagine a person like her becoming something like me.

“I know that when you’re around I feel safe nothing could ever hurt me. I get butterflies in my stomach when you touch me. I know your soul, Ra. I don’t know how, but I know. I knew it the second I saw you. You weren’t meant for this existence. You fought for good once, and I’m certain you will again.” Etta was strong in words. She spoke with solid confidence. She described what I felt.

Title: The Human Side (Book two, The Demon Side Series)
Author: Heaven Liegh Eldeen
Publisher: Decadent Publishing

About the Book: From above, Etta’s life seems to be calming down in the town of Quantico, Virginia, but with every passing moment away from his love, Rahovart finds the emptiness unbearable.

After redeeming himself once again as an Arch, Rahovart is still unable to let his past go. Needing to be near Etta, he strikes a deal with Father—except it turns into a mission with great consequences.

With Arch Angel Gabriel in tow, Rahovart sets out to prove himself worthy of Etta’s love, only to face discouragement from Etta’s father, John, and her new boyfriend, Tristan—on top of the threats made to Etta. Would he be able to protect her if she no longer remembered him or shared the love they once held so dearly?

One thing’s for sure: The past, with all of its secrets and lies, will come back to haunt them all.

Excerpt from The Human Side

“I have two solutions, but the choice of which to accept is up to you. There is plenty of time to think about these choices, but remember, whatever you choose, you will be bound to it.”

“What are the choices Father?”

“Your first choice is an exchange. Swear never to interfere with Etta’s life again, and all you have lost will be restored, including rank and principalities. If and when she returns to Heaven, her memories will be restored. Break the promise at any time for any reason, your soul shall be sent to Purgatory and Etta’s Guardians will be removed from her detail. As for the second choice, go to Earth in human form with no wings, no abilities. Show Etta the same cruelty and disdain as when the Demon Rahovart met her. Etta fell in love with a Demon once. It should be quite interesting to see if she can do it again. She must profess her love without coaxing or prompting. There can be no mention of our deal or what lies beyond the veil, including who you truly are, where you come from. Fail to abide by the rules or rekindle her affections, your days shall be spent on Earth with no recollection of life beyond the veil. But, succeed, and you can return home with the added benefit of continuing your relationship with her. Visit her anytime as long as it does not interfere with work.”

I listened intently as Father explained my options. Both carried heavy consequences if I failed to abide by their guidelines. He’d given me a life or death decision to make, but I didn’t need time to think. Without thought or question, I gave Father my answer.

Please take some time to get to know Heaven a little better -

About the author:  Heaven Liegh Eldeen started her writing career three years ago after being challenged by a relative. With her ‘Oh, Yes I can!’ attitude, determination and support from her family, she completed her first novel The Demon Side, which released in October 2011 and has been a finalist for Best Paranormal Romance in Romcom Inc.’s 2011 Reader Crown Awards as well as Oklahoma Romance Writers of America 2012 International Digital Awards. On November 28th, 2012 she celebrated the release of The Human Side; book two of The Demon Side series, which won Turning the Pages YA Paranormal Romance of the Year.

When she’s not kissing owies, climbing Mount Dishmore, or obsessing over her Facebook book page, you can find her at the computer revising or editing one of her five works in progress or Saturday evenings as a co-host to KMYC’s 1410AM The Dirt’s with Lori Schulz.  Having lived in many states, she has now settled down in California with her husband, her son, and a beta fish named Barry and guinea pig Skunkers.

1.   How do you typically write?  Do you plot it all out beforehand or do you just let the story pour out?
I cannot plan a story out to save my life. I quit trying after my first novella The Demon Side. My brain moves at a million miles per hour. So, as I write the story is always moving in different directions.
2.            Do you have a favorite place to write or “must haves” while writing?
If you see me grabbing a Pepsi, a bag of Hershey Kisses and my Ipod…watch out ‘cause I’m on writing mode.  I’ve tried writing in silence with nothing to keep my mouth moving and I simply cannot do it. I end up with sentence such as ‘See Johnny jump.’
3.            Do you have a job outside of being an author?
Yes I do. I’m a mommy and wife first. If I’m not having my pant leg tugged on, or climbing a mountain of laundry, you can find me co-hosting KMYC’s 1410am The Dirt with Lori Schulz
4.         Do you have a favorite quote?
Hell is yourself and the only redemption is when a person puts himself aside to feel deeply for another person. ~ Tennessee Williams
5.         In one sentence, why should we read your book?
The Demon Side is a story told from the perspective of the ultimate celestial bad boy, Rahovart, who is thrown off his game by Earth’s most misunderstood schizophrenic, Etta.
6.         What do you come up with first when creating your character- the back story, the plot, the characteristics?
I came up with Rahovart the Demon first after watching a scary movie with husband.  I found myself wondering what life would truly be like on the other side as a Demon and from there everything else seemed to fall into place.
7.         What does a day look like in the life of your main character?
For Rahovart, his days are spent the same as previous days.  He wonders around the Victorian home on Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, that he has been banished to playing pranks and terrorizing the tenants until he finally rids himself of his unwanted roommates.
8.         What time of day do you like to write?
I’d love to be able to write 24/7 but mommy and wife duties only allow me to write in the mornings, right after I shove my wee-one off to school and boot hub off to work. So, from 8am-1:30pm you can find at my computer typing away.
9.         What is the most you have written in one day?
A freak incident happened where the stars aligned and my husband and son actually both out of town for a whole weekend together. I’m not sure how much I wrote in one day since I try to focus more on quality and not quantity, but by the end of the weekend I had written twelve chapters in The Human Side, book two in The Demon Side series.  Ahhhh, that was an awesome weekend except for the ten pounds I gained from all the Pepsi and Hershey Kisses.
 10.         If your book was made into a TV series or movie, what actors would you like to see playing your characters? Feel free to add pics.

Okay get ready for a lot of pics. Ha-Ha I’ve had time to think about this. For Rahovart, hands down I want WBFF Pro fitness model Bobby Momenteller.

Etta has to be played my Emma Watson.

Liam Neeson and Sandra Bullock would be the perfect parents, John and Rene Divad.

Travis Fimmel would be the perfect Lucifer!

Silly questions –
1. If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
I would have Grammar Powers. Not only would I know exactly where a comma or semi colon should be placed but I could help others as well!
2. Do you have any hidden talents?
I can put lipstick on with toes and end my thumbs behind my fore fingers. How I learned I could do those things or what they would be useful for, I have no clue.
3. If someone wrote a book about your life, what would the title be?
Project Girls
4. Talk or text?
TEXT! A little known fact about me is that I am partially deaf. Shocking I know since I do radio but I have tricks I use to know what people are saying however, the volume on my phone doesn’t go high enough for those tricks to work.
5. Guilty pleasure tv show?
*coughs* Army Wives.  The show is a little out there and soap opera-y for me typically, but something about it is like a really good car wreck (if there’s such a thing). You don’t want to watch but you can’t keep yourself from looking to see if a head rolls out of the carnage.
6. Most __________ in High School?
Most likely to spend life in prison! I still hold the record for most fights at my Jr. High and High School but no worries folks, I am truly a reformed woman.  Now I’m all love, peace, and chocolate.
7. Ebooks, paperbacks or hardcovers?
I love paperbacks!! But, I am a woman who craves instant gratification at the lowest price possible. With eBooks, I can buy several books and get them immediately for the price of a paperback or hardcover. Well, on some books. Some eBooks I can’t help but laugh at their prices.

Book Review: Funny Tragic Crazy Magic by Sheena Boekweg

Title: Funny Tragic Crazy Magic
Author: Sheena Boekweg

About the Book:

Keep your head down.
Don't make waves.
Don't let anyone know you're a freak.

LARISSA ALVAREZ is a witch. Magic was useful enough to make her pretty, but beyond transformation runes, Larissa has ignored her mom’s pleas to learn about her magical heritage on the grounds that it’s just too weird.

But when her family is killed, and the powerful book of runes Larissa was supposed to inherit disappears, she realizes she’s not going to survive without magic. Worse still, she’s falling in love with her only ally, her best friend Joe, who has a secret that could kill them both.

Now magic is the only way she can reclaim her heritage and save the boy she loves. Larissa dives into the world of magic she’s always ignored and finds herself caught in the middle of an age-old war between Witches and Mages.

She may be poorly trained.
She may not have anyone to trust.
But it's time to start making waves.

My thoughts:  I liked this book very much.  Everytime I read a YA book, I wish that this genre had been around when I was a teenager.  I would have devoured these books then.

Larissa is telling this story after it has all happened, but for the most part it reads like you are right in the action.  The first thing you learn is that Larissa's family was killed in a car accident and that even though she is just a teenager, the Grandmother Witches have decided that she is able to take care of herself.  They apply some Runes (Spells) so that know one knows, outside of Larissa, that they are dead.  She has to carry the grief alone and somehow manage to go to school, pay the bills, take care of herself, etc.  Then she meets Joe.

She knows right away Joe is different, and soon she has let him in to her world.  These two are perfect for each other, but unfortunately they come from the two sides of the war - sort of like Romeo and Juliet - the paranormal version - sort of. . .

As you go along in the story, things that happen early on, things that don't seem to have much effect on the story, start to really come into play.  That made for an interesting read for me as then I started thinking about things that had been mentioned and wondered whether they would show up again.

You kind of knew part of the ending, as Larissa shares that at the beginning - where she is and that this has all already happened - but getting back to the point was a great read!

GENESIS

In the beginning, there was a single doe. It lay on an asphalt tree-lined road, its fragile body losing breath as quickly as the day had lost its light. Its black eyes, unfathomably deep, took in the sight of its surroundings- of the world it was born unto.
The stars and the moon that lit all of the nights before this, the windblown trees that shaded the warmest of days, the sharp green blades of grass and smooth scarlet skins of berries that fed the doe from birth ‘til now; all these things, the doe understood. All these things, it had come to cherish.
But on this night, there were other things present that the doe had no understanding of. Firstly, the pool of red spreading around it, warm and sticky and smelling of pine. Secondly, the mass of crushed metal and glass, glinting on the asphalt a little ways away. Thirdly, the girl looking back at it, meeting its black eyes with hers.
In the beginning, there was a single doe. But it was not alone. There was a girl. She lay on the asphalt tree-lined road, her broken body losing heat as quickly as the car had lost control. Her frosted sapphire eyes, incomparably hollow, watched the doe as its chest stopped half-rise. She could almost sense its spirit leave, slip out its mouth with its last breath.
As she laid there, her skin going cold and body going numb, she could hear nothing but the crickets. See nothing but the dim glare of the headlights fading into the night as the car battery neared death too.
She was next. She could feel it. The drifting, the sliding. The veil of darkness melting over her. She had never considered the feel of death, but she never thought it would feel like this. Nauseous, glacial.
For a moment, a long unending one, everything went silent, not even the murmur of her heartbeat to be heard. Then, as her eyes fell closed and the blackness of the inside of her lids painted over the blackness of the night, she heard it: her name whispered into the crisp air of the early spring night.
Like a gust of wind before a storm, a surge of momentarily silent crickets, birds, squirrels, bees, owls, wolves- the entirety of the woods it seemed- echoed to her all at once as her consciousness came sweeping back.
The girl’s eyes flickered open, slowly sliding across the asphalt to the pool of red where the doe had been laying breathlessly. It lay unblinking, its black eyes appearing reflective copper in what remained of the faint headlights; the same as they had been in front of the car before the halting collision.
The girl, laying there on the cold abandon asphalt road, blinked away tears as the heat in her body began to climb. She had been afraid, terrified that she had been on the brink of death or that she had died altogether. But looking upon the doe, she saw what true death looked like. The girl was not dead. She was alive, slowly finding her breath again.
That girl- alone in the darkness on that cold spring night, hearing no sirens in the distance yet breathing more steadily with every passing moment- she was you.

Blog Tour: Invisible by Cecily Anne Paterson (Book Review and Giveaway!)

Title: Invisible
Author: Cecily Anne Paterson

About the Book: Jazmine Crawford doesn’t make decisions. She doesn’t make choices. She doesn’t make friends. Jazmine Crawford only wants one thing: to be invisible.

For Jazmine, it’s a lot easier to take out her hearing aid and drift along in life pretending that nothing’s wrong than it is to admit that she’s heartbroken about her dad dying. She’s been drifting and ignoring her over-worried mum for four years now. But something’s got to give – and soon.

When bad girl Shalini and her mates adopt Jazmine, she follows along without thinking but quickly finds herself part of their plan to vandalise the drama classroom. Jazmine manages to save the key prop, a jewelled headdress, before drama teacher Miss Fraser walks in to find a room full of destruction. Later, sitting in disgrace in the principal’s office, Jazmine is offered a choice: become a ‘runner’ for Miss Fraser in the upcoming production of The Secret Garden or face a three week suspension and a permanent mark on her record.

It’s Miss Fraser who clinches the decision. “I believe in you Jazmine,” she says. “I know you can do this.” And Jazmine, terrified, disbelieving and elated all at the same time, joins the play and leaves her invisible life behind.

For a while it’s all good. Writing in the new journal that Miss Fraser gives her connects her to the memories she has of her father. Drama star and chocolate lover Liam is friendly and Jazmine realises that making friends, talking to her mother and feeling her emotions isn’t as scary as she thought. In the play, Jazmine becomes the prompter and a stand in and discovers to her amazement that she loves the stage and has a natural talent for acting. In a final happy twist of fate, acting diva Angela breaks both her ankles and with only a week before the curtain goes up, Miss Fraser asks Jazmine to take on the main role of Mary.

But it’s not quite as good as it seems. Jazmine is still fearful and doesn’t want to give too much away. She can’t quite believe that Liam likes her, and is worried that if people knew what she was really like, they wouldn’t want to be her friend.

But then Shalini returns from her suspension. In her mind, she has been betrayed. She’s out for payback, and she expects that Jazmine is going to do what she’s told, or else she just might expose her greatest secret...

My Thoughts:  This was a good read and really made me think about the choices that people make.  I liked Jazmine, even though I was frustrated with her at times.  I lost my dad at 17 after a short illness, so I understand why she wanted to turn off all her feelings and her emotions.  Since she was only 9 when her dad died, and he died suddenly, there would be no time to prepare for the emotions that you would have.  Her mom was dealing with her own demons regarding his death and so was not a strong support for her daughter during this time.  She actually gave her daughter the idea to not share her problems with other people.

It was hard for me to picture the kids in this book being just 12-13 years old.  To me it read more like it was high school kids.  Maybe I am just kidding myself to think that 12 year olds can't be as mean or destructive as Shalini - but having had 2 girls go through middle school already - and only recently hearing some of the bullying that went on - I guess I should pull my head out of the sand.

Miss Fraser was great for Jazmine - just giving her the confidence that she needed (which it sounds like she did for all the kids - not just Jazmine).  It was the boost that Jazmine needed at just the right time to start to live again.

The play that Jazmine was involved in was The Secret Garden and I loved the way the author compared Jazmine to Mary through out the book.  Jazmine even starts her own garden and through it helps to feel alive again.

As I mentioned, I got frustrated with Jazmine at times, especially after Shalini came back and she wouldn't tell anyone that she was being bullied by her. I get why kids don't tell, because they are not mature enough to see the big picture and only think that by telling that things will get worse for them.  Jazmine even thought that her new friends wouldn't want to have anything to do with her if they find out that she had been a part of Shalini's destructive behavior. So rather than tell them the truth, she tries to keep it all a secret, and in so doing starts to push them away herself.

All in all this was a quick read and I would recommend it to any middle grade/high school student who has felt like they were alone, that they didn't fit in, or has been a victim of bullying.  I liked that Jazmine started making choices in the end, even if they terrified her.  She chose to live.

A Simple Song by Melody Carlson (Book Review)

Title: A Simple Song
Author: Melody Carlson
Publisher:  Revell Books

About the book: In her newest young adult novel, bestselling author Melody Carlson takes Katrina Yoder somewhere few Amish teens have been: reality TV.

Katrina Yoder loves to sing, but her Amish parents view singing as vainglory and a sin. Katrina's best friend, Bekka, is convinced Katrina should try out for American Star, a televised singing competition that Bekka has been secretly watching. Katrina resists the temptation until her father's health worsens. He desperately needs a surgery the family cannot afford. Katrina decides she must go against her parents' wishes to win the money needed to help her father. But how will she handle herself as an Amish teenager out in the world?

Teen girls will be swept into the excitement as Katrina ventures out of her quiet Amish world to become a reality television star. Will she be successful? And will she be accepted back into her community when it's over?

Available June 2013 at your favorite bookseller from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group.

My thoughts: This was a fun, light read and did a nice job of combining both the Amish and the English worlds while also helping to define the differences between them.  Katrina loves to sing, but was admonished once as a child for singing too loudly, so has been conflicted ever since about her joy of singing.  When she discovers that her grandmother once sang in a folk trio in the sixties, before coming back to join the church, she continues to wonder why her singing seems to trouble her parents.

Being left an old transistor radio from her grandmother, she covertly learns some songs from a Golden Oldies station.  During group singing, the other teens convince her to sing them a song.  One song leads to another, and then to a handful as they are all enraptured by her voice.  Bekka, her best friend, claims she sings better than the performers on American Star, a show she watches on her family's work computer when she is supposed to be working!

Her dad had been hurt in a tractor accident and his pain has gotten so bad that there are days he cannot get out of bed.  Fearing that his older brother (due to his nagging wife) might cut them off from the farm that sustains them, and knowing that her father could benefit from a surgery they cannot afford, Katrina decides to apply to American Star.  She knows that her family might cut her off, but is convinced by her friends (and brother and sister) that if she has a chance to win some money that could pay for her father's surgery, then she should do it.

I liked the way the author allowed Katrina to remain true to her Amish roots while competing on this English show.  Whenever she felt she had compromised her beliefs, she would come back stronger than ever to stay true to her beliefs.  She was able to make and help her new friends, and still be quite competitive just by being herself.  The producer also made it possible for her to meet one of the trio that sang with her grandmother all those years ago - so even though her grandmother had passed away, she was able to learn a lot more about her.  I think this also helped her to make some of the decisions that she did.

If you have a daughter who is convinced that she is the next "Voice" or "American Idol" then I think she would enjoy this book. While I am sure that it doesn't come close to the 'behind-the-scenes' of the real show, it might give them something else to think about as to why they want to compete, and what they are willing to compromise to get their dreams.

Blog Tour: The Warner Grimoire by Clay Held (Promo, Giveaway and Author Interview)

The Warner Grimoire
(Book One:  Bad Apple)
Clay Held

Book Blurb:

Meet Simon Warner, a fourteen-year-old who drowned. Death was just the beginning. Dying awakens an angry and malevolent force inside Simon–magic, and before he can comprehend his mystical transformation his adopted father is kidnapped during a mysterious fire that destroys their home.

Within hours Simon is violently yanked into the supernatural world, where the real trouble starts: he is the descendent of an evil sorcerer, and the magical community isn't exactly welcoming of him. Making matters worse, Simon finds himself on a collision course with the forces of the deranged Silas Darrow, a charming yet xenophobic warlock who fears humanity will one day eradicate all magic. In order to protect "his" people, this false messiah intends to strike first.

Magic--it may have saved Simon's life, but it may have just doomed the world.

Book Synopsis

Does your heart go bump in the night?

14-year-old Simon Warner isn't having a very good October. To start with, he drowned, and then the real trouble started. Next thing he knows, he's back among the living, and face-to-face with a ghoulish-looking man who kidnaps his adopted father. Enter Nathan Tamerlane, a bonafide wizard, and soon Simon is deep in the hidden world of the supernatural, walking among the Freemancers: a secret society of wizards, and the stewards of all magic on Earth. Soon the truth is revealed: Simon's birth parents are wicked sorcerers who betrayed the Freemancers years ago before going into hiding. Making matters worse, a cruel and xenophobic warlock named Silas Darrow is gathering his followers (some would say worshipers) to lead an assault on the non-magical world. Now, if Simon ever wants to see his adopted father again, he's going to have to join Darrow's cult. Easier said than done. All it takes is one moment of weakness, and a powerful evil will infest Simon's soul forever.

About the author:

I'm Clay Held, a refugee from wild world of video game testing, currently a project manager passing my days in the wild (and very flat) plains of Central Illinois. Once upon a time I was the editor for Grassroots Literary Magazine at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where I earned my Bachelors of Arts in Creative Writing. Today I help make sure software ships on time, and at night I'm busy making things up and writing them down.

In my spare time (what is that again?) I like to read and cook and play with my cats and maintain my blog at www.clayheld.com. When the weather is right, I go storm spotting. Illinois is good like that.

Clay Held answered many questions for me!  Please enjoy getting to know a little more about him!

1. How do you typically write? Do you plot it all out beforehand or do you just let the story pour out?
     a. I have a master design document/bible that I have spent a considerable amount of time developing. Even still, it is more of a guideline when I actually start writing. Some of my favorite parts of the series have come from going “off script.”

2. Do you have a favorite place to write or “must haves” while writing?
     a. I write in my office, which I rearrange probably once a month. It’s kind of like a zen garden for me. I’ve definitely channeled a lot of creative energy into the space. As far as “must haves,” the closest things to that are quiet and time. Too much ritual can work against you as a writer, so I try to keep my routine as simple as possible. Close the door and pray for no distractions.

3. Do you have much say in the title or covers of you books?
     a. I have total creative control. That being said, I have been blessed with an abundance of very creative, very intelligent people who are more than willing to generate ideas and who aren’t afraid to tell me when something isn’t quite right.

4. Is there anything that has surprised you about writing, publishing or touring with your books?
     a. Growing up, I had this image of The Writer® in my head. You know, the tortured soul tireless perfectly his craft from atop a mountain of secluded celebrity. That image was one of the first misconceptions my college mentor beat out of me, and I’m glad he did. Writing is hard, and it is imageless. There’s no tweed jackets with elbow patches or lunches with contemporaries where you trade bon mots. I’m glad I shed that notion, because it helped me focus on the important part--writing.

5. Do you have a favorite author/book or one that you always recommend?
     a. I get asked a lot if I have any recommendations for books. With a library of over a few thousand books, I guess people think I’m an authority! It depends. If essays are your thing, I can’t recommend David Sedaris nearly enough. He’s a genuinely awesome dude. If fiction is your thing, I love to recommend Edgar Burroughs or Robert Howard.

6. Was there anything (or anyone) while growing up which helped you decide you wanted to be a writer?
     a. There was a short story competition in 3rd grade. I didn’t win, but I had so much fun writing that I didn’t care. There’s a lot of hilariously bad writing in boxes somewhere.

7. Do you have a job outside of being an author?
     a. Yep. I’m a project manager at a software company, and before that I was a video game tester. Both jobs, believe it or not, gave me a business-like perspective towards developing creative products. Before that I just kind of wandered with my writing. Now I live in a world of milestones, deadlines, and roadmaps. My writing has improved dramatically as a result.

8. What would you tell a beginning writer?
     a. You are every bit as much a writer as everyone who has come before you and dared to put story to paper. Cherish and nurture your voice, and never compare your inside to somebody else’s outside.

9. What were your favorite books growing up?
     a. The Monster at the End of this Book, Twilight Eyes, Kidnapped, Doctor De Soto, Interview with the Vampire, Thinner, I Vampire, Star Trek novels, The Hitchhiker’s Guide series, and every comic book I could get my grubby little hands on.

I loved reading The Monster at the End of this Book with my son and I list Anne Rice and Stephen King as two of my favorite authors as well!
10. Do you have any books on your nightstand right now?
     a. Yep. I’m currently reading Sandman Slim, Proven Guilty (Dresden Files #8), John Carter and the Gods of Hollywood, and about a dozen books on project management and marketing.

11. If you could meet one person who has died, who would that be?
     a. Carl Sagan. His Cosmos series is inspiring, and he seems like a genuinely interesting person.

12. If you could co-author a book with anyone, who would it be?
     a. I would love to work on something with Neil Gaiman.

13. Do you have a favorite quote?
     a. “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson. I have a plaque of this on my wall.

14. In one sentence, why should we read your book?
     a. Because you’ll learn something about yourself while having a fun time.

15. What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
     a. I’m from the South, albeit the northern-most part (Southern Illinois). I don’t have the same Southern twang I had growing up, but whenever I’m back down that way for a few days I turn back into Colonel Sanders.

16. What do you come up with first when creating your character- the back story, the plot, the characteristics?
     a. Their innermost desire, and their innermost secret. Then I put those two things in direct conflict, and work my way out.

17. What do you do in your spare time?
     a. Too much. I run a website. I occasionally podcast with some friends. I design silly things for silly reasons, or I write other stories. I build pillow forts and play hide-and-seek with my cats. I cook. I exercise. When I’m feeling really burned out, I play video games with my old friends from testing job.

18. What does a day in your life look like?
     a. Up at 5:30, write for two hours. Drive to work. Give work my all until 5pm, drive home. 6-7:30, exercise or write (alternating days). 7:30-10:30, discretionary time. Asleep by 11.

19. What does a day look like in the life of your main character?
     a. Well, in Bad Apple, Simon’s days are pretty hectic. Run run run, I would say.

20. How does your family feel about having a writer in the family? Do they read your books?
     a. My wife is just glad I’ve finally shut up about Bad Apple! My family is ambivalent. At most they think it’s just a curiosity, something useless I do to fill the empty hours that should be filled with children or analogues to decisions they made in their own lives. My siblings don’t care, and my parents are just like, “That’s nice.”

21. Is there anything else that you would like my readers to know?
     a. Bad Apple is my first full length novel, but I also have a collection of short stories available, and a free book of kid’s poems available on my website for free. I’m also experimenting with serializing a few stories on my site, and I will have several more books coming out in the future.

22. What time of day do you like to write?
     a. Morning. Before the sun is even up.

23. Where/when do you brainstorm best?
     a. I never stop brainstorming. My most intense brainstorming seems to come while commuting to/from the day job.

24. How long do you think about a story before starting to write the book?
     a. There’s no standard answer here. Maybe a day, maybe a month. It all depends on my bandwidth at that moment. Taking notes and writing down ideas is pretty trivial in terms of time needed, but I have to schedule my book-starting times pretty ruthlessly.

25. What is the most you have written in one day?
     a. In recent memory, about 8,000 words in a single day.

26. What themes do you love to read or write about?
     a. Family. Identity. Choices. The intersection of what others want for you versus what you want for you.

27. What book would you like to read again?
     a. I keep meaning to re-read Ready Player One by Ernest Cline.

Silly questions –
1. If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
     a. Teleportation. Goodbye commute!

2. Do you have any hidden talents?
     a. Yes.

(Note to self- remember to add 'and what are they' to this question! - lol)

3. Night owl or early bird?
     a. Night owl on the weekends.

4. Favorite season?
     a. Autumn

5. If someone wrote a book about your life, what would the title be?
     a. A Quiet Kid

6. Favorite sport?
     a. Baseball. GO CARDS!

7. Favorite music?
     a. Currently, film scores

8. Talk or text?
     a. Text.

9. Cat or dog?
     a. Four cats. We’re crazy.

10. Guilty pleasure tv show?
     a. Gilmore Girls

I love Gilmore Girls!!
11. Sweet or salty snacks?
     a. Sweet.

12. Coffee or tea?
     a. Coffee

13. Favorite holiday destination?
     a. Walt Disney World

14. Do you have a literary crush?
     a. Neil Gaiman

15. If you could live in a literary world - what world would that be and why?
     a. The world of Altered Carbon. All the time in the world if you play your cards right. Centuries to work.

16. Most embarrassing moment?
     a. Too many to pick from.

17. Favorite gadget?
     a. My iPhone. Note taking, scheduling, emailing, music, it does everything. I would be lost without it.

18. If you could travel forward or backward in time, where would you go and why?
     a. Forward. Hope lives in the future. It cannot be inserted into the past.

19. Most __________ in High School?
     a. “Most Poetic”, class of 2001.

21. Ebooks, paperbacks or hardcovers?
     a. Yes.

Can't Stop Believing by Jodi Thomas (Book Review) w/ a guest post by Jodi Thomas!

Title: Can't Stop Believing
Author: Jodi Thomas
Publisher: Berkley

About the Book: NY Times and USA Today bestselling author Jodi Thomas takes us back to Harmony, Texas, in CAN’T STOP BELIEVING. The sixth book in her popular Harmony series presents a story where big dreams are brewing—and anything and everything is possible…

Cord McMillan gave up his freedom at eighteen when he went to jail for a crime he didn't commit. Now, ten years later, he's about to give it up again for a piece of land. Nevada Britain, his neighbor, has just made him an offer he can't refuse: If he'll marry her, she'll sign over a section of property that their families have been fighting over for a hundred years. Nevada refuses to ex-plain why, but Cord knows the bargain is in his favor.

He just has one condition--she has to sleep in his bed every night as long as their doomed marriage lasts.

Nevada only wants to maintain her family's legacy--and redeem herself for a wrong she did Cord years ago. But as she spends more time with her husband by necessity, she discovers something unexpected--a love so deep it takes her breath away.

“Another winner...Fans will be delighted.”

“Compelling and beautifully written.”

My thoughts: First I want to apologize to Jodi for being late with my review.  She is one of the nicest authors I have ever worked with and I hate it that I missed my review date!  And I absolute love her Harmony series.

This is book 6 in the series, and I have loved - loved - loved - the ones that I have had the good fortune to read! (Welcome to Harmony, Book 1; Somewhere Along the Way, Book 2; The Comforts of Home, Book 3) and really hope that I can fit the two I missed in my reading schedule! (Just Down the Road, Book 4Chance of a Lifetime, Book 5)

I think the reason that I like her books so much is that her characters are flawed, which makes them so real.  They have things in their pasts that they are ashamed of, but those things have helped shape who they are.  They are not always the best looking, like you seem to find in all the romance novels. They might be overweight, or handicapped, or made to feel homely or unloved, but this just makes them more believable.  These are people that you could meet in your hometown, or right next door.

The books in the series, while they might focus on a person or couple, are really about all the people in the town.  You never know who might show up from previous books, or who you might be meeting that is going to be a major player in a book down the road. I loved it that this book, Can't Stop Believing, revisited Ronny from The Comforts of Home and brought some closure to a chapter in her life, as well as Tyler Wright, whom we met in Welcome to Harmony.

By no means don't think that you have to read them in order though!  Like I said, I missed two books in the middle, but that did not affect this storyline at all.  I think what it will do though, is make you hungry for more and you will find yourself traveling back to Harmony again and again.

About the Author: Jodi Thomas is the NY Times and USA Today bestselling author of 37 novels and 11 short story collections. In June 2011, WELCOME

fiction. Jodi currently serves as the Writer in Residence at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas.

From the day I started writing CAN’T STOP BELIEVING, I felt like I was surrounded by people I could love.  These characters walked off the pages and said hello.  I had to laugh when Martha Q, a widow seven times married, forms a writing group and then decides to help folks out whether they want it or not.  I cried when Ronny first sees a love she thought she’d lost.  And I fell in love with Cord and Nevada as they fought their way through all the baggage they both carried to find something worth keeping.

People often ask me where my characters come from.  In truth, I don’t feel like I make them up.  I feel more like they sit down across the desk and talk to me as I write.  They tell me the story and some nights I stay up longer to get it all down.

Cord McMillan stopped my heart when I first saw him.  He was a man trying to stand tall even after life had done its best to knock him down.  He doesn’t think he has a friend in the world and every time someone shows him a kindness, he pays it back double.  He can’t believe it when his rich, spoiled neighbor offers a bargain he can’t turn down.  He offers her the one thing she can’t buy, honesty.

CAN’T STOP BELIEVING will warm your heart.  The people of Harmony will stay with you long after you finish reading.  Come along with me into a story that will make you laugh and cry and fall in love for the first time, for the last time, forever.

Enjoy the book,

Jodi Thomas
