“I’m here.” It’s all I can think to say. “You can tell me to leave if you want, but otherwise, I’m here.”

He pulls his hand from mine. “You don’t want to do that.”

“Like I don’t want to look at your paintings?” I tease.

The corner of his mouth twitches. “Where did you come from, Romy? And why now? You’re making things more complicated.”

My smile freezes. “I am? I-I didn’t mean to.”

He turns to me, twisted locks of damp, dark hair skimming his cheeks. “I know you didn’t mean to. But you’re doing it all the same. Every minute you stand here makes things harder to figure out.”

“What are you talking about?”

His eyes squeeze shut. “Nothing. Never mind.”

“Do you want me to leave, Caleb?” I search his expression, trying to figure out what’s going on for him.

He opens his eyes. Stares at me. “I don’t think it’s fair to ask you to stay.”

“Why?” I shiver as his gaze traces along my collarbone and slides up to my face.
“Because I’m a mess.”

“And that means you deserve to be alone?”

He flinches, like everything inside him is raw and tender, like the slightest touch or word can hurt him. “I don’t know what it means. I’m just giving you an escape hatch. And I’m suggesting you take it.”

We are inches apart. Outside, there’s a clap of thunder so loud that I feel it beneath my feet. The lights flicker. Caleb’s gaze meets mine. I lay my palm on his cheek, his stubble rough against my skin. He seems like a wounded animal tonight, shrinking from anything that might hurt him, but as my fingers brush the hair at his temples, he lets out a long breath.

Then, mirroring my movements, he puts his hand on the side of my face. His thumb skims my cheekbone. “What are you doing?” he whispers.
“I’m not sure. What are you doing?”

“I have no idea.”

About the author: Mila Ferrera lives in New England, where she has a family and a job and does various normal, everyday things, all while plotting novels in her head. She has a passion for writing new adult/adult romance featuring psychological twists and tortured heroes. They took a swig from their water pouches and were about to set off except that a glow from another shaft next to the one they had emerged from alerted Jules.

“Shh!” he motioned for the others to stay behind him. Gophers didn’t carry lamps.

After some seconds the glow brightened. Jules glanced from one tunnel opening to another. Which one should they rush into to escape from whatever was heading their way? A part of him was curious to see who could be traveling in these parts with lamps. But if he stayed behind and it was an enemy, would he endanger his siblings? He shoved Tippy behind him and determined the direction to take. Hopefully toward the river. Hurry!
“Jules!” a whisper echoed in the chamber.

Jules swiveled toward the speaker.

It was a gopher, all right! With his back to the tunnel he’d edged out from, Holden stood, a crude jar lantern in hand and with a stunned face. Even in the dim light it was obvious Holden had bruises and cuts on his arms and face.

“Who pummeled you?” Jules rushed toward his neighbor, eyes wide.

“We must get away.” Holden was still panting. His green cloak was in shreds.

“What happened? Did you see my mom?”

“Your mom?” Holden shook his head, eyes dazed. “But my mom….” He hung his head and slumped to the ground.

About the author: Emma Right is a happy wife and homeschool mother of five living in the Pacific West Coast of the USA. Besides running a busy home, and looking after their five pets, which includes two cats, two bunnies and a Long-haired dachshund, she also writes stories for her children. He brushed my hair off my shoulder. His fingers caressed my neck, sending tiny tingles racing down my spine. My heart hammered against my ribs to the tune of kiss me, kiss me, kiss me. I wanted this man. Wanted to know him intimately.

My head told me it was impossible that I could feel this way after such a short time, but my heart was ignoring it, lost in a mad, chaotic rhythm of its own.

Ben's hand cupped my hip, his other pressed against my back. It was all the encouragement I needed. I closed the final small gap between us until I was crushed against his body. It was hard and ridged, warm.

Our lips met in a kiss that turned my legs to jelly. My knees buckled, but Ben's arms circled my waist. He held me there, firm yet gentle, like I was something precious. I felt dizzy and weightless. The world spun one way and I the other, out of control. I didn't care. It was exactly what I wanted to feel. Exactly how I'd always imagined a kiss should feel.

Yet I wanted more. The kiss filled me with longing that clawed at my heart. It wasn't enough. Not nearly enough.
