AUTHOR BIO
I’m in my thirties and living in New Zealand. A little over a year ago I lost somebody very close to me. I was lucky in a way, I was given enough time to make a promise. My promise was that I would never forget our young and innocent love, and it’s a promise I intend to keep.

My writing is a way to help me keep that promise. I’ve always enjoyed writing but was forced into being ‘prudent’ and giving myself over to soul-crushing office work for the sake of a steady salary. Recent events forced me to re-evaluate my priorities and I decided to take a chance. I like to put little pieces of ‘us’ into my writing, from funny conversations we had, to apocalyptic arguments, to that special feeling you get when you hop into bed fully aware that your feet are freezing but your partner doesn’t kick you away.

Even though these things are set in fictional worlds and attached to fictional characters, in a way it feels like I’m doing something that will make our love live forever. If somebody reads one of my stories and likes a joke or sheds a tear, then our love has lived on, and I thank any readers I might have for that.

Sixteen-year-old Selena Fallon is a dreamer. Not a daydreamer, but an I-see-the-future kind of dreamer. Normally, this is not a problem, as she has gotten

Enter Dillan Sloan. Selena has seen the new guy in a different dream, and he is even more drool-worthy in person. Beyond the piercing blue eyes and tousled dark hair, there is something else that draws her to him. Something…electric. Too bad he acts like he hates her.

When Selena learns she’s being targeted by a force bigger and darker than anything she ever imagined, she’s had enough. Despite her death dream, Selena is not going to give up easily, especially when she discovers that Dillan isn’t what he seems…and might not actually hate her after all. Publisher: Entangled Teen
Pub. Date: March 4, 2014

 Find it: GoodreadsAmazon, B&N, iBookstore

Donna Pierce might hear voices, but that doesn’t mean she’s crazy. Probably.

The voices do serve their purpose, though—whenever Donna hears them, she
knows she’s in danger. So when they start yelling at the top of their proverbial lungs, it’s no surprise she and her best friend, Deke, end up narrowly escaping a zombie horde. Alone without their families, they take refuge at their high school with the super-helpful nerds, the bossy class president, and—best of all?—Liam, hottie extraordinaire and Donna’s long-time crush. When Liam is around, it’s easy to forget about the moaning zombies, her dad’s plight to reach them, and how weird Deke is suddenly acting toward her.

But as the teens’ numbers dwindle and their escape plans fall apart, Donna has to listen to the secrets those voices in her head have been hiding. It seems not all the zombies are shuffling idiots, and the half-undead aren’t really down with kids like Donna…

Craft Envy by Deborah Crombie - GIVEAWAY!

Craft Envy
Guest Post by Deborah Crombie

I have craft envy. A bad case of it. It probably started when my grandmother tried to teach me to knit. Total failure. Sewing, ditto. Even sewing on Girl Scout badges was a challenge—lots of pricked thumbs. I could never figure out how to use a thimble.

Fast forward to sensible adult. I took a weaving class because I was fascinated by the beautiful yarns. I even dreamed of having a loom in my living room, because they are so cool. Then I learned how hard it was to set up a pattern. I made one throw (which I still have) and that was it. Quits.
Then a friend who is a beautiful quilter offered to teach me to quilt. I bought fabric. Lots of fabric. That part was so much fun. (Fat quarters—what a great name!) We made a design. We cut out some little squares. I sewed two of them together. That was, um, three years ago… The fabric still waits, along with my cute little sewing kit.

Last year I made up my mind that I was going to really work at making a beautiful journal. You know, the kind with ART and WORDS. Very creative, very unique. I bought $100 worth of art supplies. I bought a nice box to put them in. And there they sit, along with my beautiful, blank, journal.
So I live vicariously through my arty, crafty, talented characters. I’ve had a watercolor painter (LEAVE THE GRAVE GREEN.) A tile maker (A FINER END.) A weaver (DREAMING OF THE BONES.) A chef and a maker of fine Scotch (NOW MAY YOU WEEP.) A designer of art deco jewelry (WHERE MEMORIES LIE.) A fabric artist (NECESSARY AS BLOOD.)

And now, in THE SOUND OF BROKEN GLASS, a brilliant guitarist. I’m not sure playing guitar counts as crafty, but it’s certainly artistic. I had a huge amount of fun learning about guitars and guitarists and what makes them tick.
And I just barely resisted the temptation to buy an electric guitar to sit in my living room. Unplayed.

In the past…
A blisteringly hot August in Crystal Palace, a solitary thirteen-year-old boy meets his next door neighbor, a recently widowed young teacher hoping to make a new start in the tight-knit South London community. Drawn together by loneliness, the unlikely pair forms a deep connection that ends in a shattering act of betrayal.

In the present…
On a cold January morning in London, Detective Inspector Gemma James is assigned to lead a Murder Investigation Team in South London, along with her colleague, Detective Sergeant Melody Talbot. Their first case: a crime scene at a seedy hotel in Crystal Palace. The victim: a well-respected barrister, found naked, trussed, and strangled. Is it an unsavory accident or murder? In either case, he was not alone, and Gemma’s team must find his companion--a search that leads them into unexpected new discoveries. Ultimately, they will begin to question everything they think they know about their world and those they trust most.

A SEAL's Salvation by Tawny Weber (Book Review)

by Tawny Weber
published in Jan 2014

Subject: Navy SEAL Petty Officer Brody Lane

Current Status: On leave

Obstacle: The one girl who was off-limits…

Where navy SEAL "Bad Ass" Brody Lane goes, trouble follows. Being run out of his hometown years ago for misbehaving with Genna Reilly—the sheriff's daughter—was one thing. Now Brody is about to step into real danger. Not the suggestive letters he's been exchanging with Genna, but the kind of trouble that can send a soldier home injured and broken inside…

Genna's entire life has been orchestrated by her family. The right job. The right friends. Enough! Brody's return offers the promise of lust-filled pleasures. Of flesh teased and tasted. She's not expecting to find a soldier with distant eyes who has secluded himself from the world. But this good girl knows exactly how to bring a bad boy back to life….

Uniformly Hot! The Few. The Proud. The Sexy as Hell.

I read this as part of Harlequin's 'Just Can't Get Enough' Campaign.

I really liked the way Brody was portrayed as the resident bad boy - but we were allowed a glimpse inside that showed it was mostly an act.  When his best friend's little sister comes on to him one night, he tries to fight it.  He thought he had done a good job of staying away from her, even though it wasn't really what he wanted.  Unfortunately, soon after he gives in, her sheriff father shows up and reads him the riot act.  He allows himself to be run out of town to save Genna any more wrath from her father and to save his grandmother any more embarrassment.   It was no surprise to me that he rose to the top as a Navy SEAL.

He thought he has put Genna and the small town prejudices behind him, but after receiving a letter from Genna with sad news about his friend and her brother, he seems compelled to writer her back - and so a flirtation develops through the U.S. Mail.  He doesn't think that anything will come of it as he never plans to return - but then a mission goes bad and his grandmother insists he come home to heal.  It is his psyche that is more damaged than his body though, and he doesn't think that it will heal anywhere.

While he has been gone, Genna has become friends with his grandmother, and is secretly thrilled that he is returning home.  She is still under daddy's watchful eye, and thumb, and is even working for the Mayor in a position that her father 'created' and insisted that she take.  It is under this guise that she first visits Brody upon his return home.  The sparks fly, but the reunion ends in flames.

I really enjoyed the way the author brought these two back together after their one fateful tryst - and she doesn't make it easy for them.  She throws conflict after conflict at them and they have to fight each other, circumstances, and Genna's parents to finally realize what it is they really want.

I can't wait to read A SEAL's Kiss and will be reviewing that for you next month as well as bringing you an interview with the series author - Tawny Weber.

~I received a complimentary copy from Harlequin and Net Galley in exchange for my unbiased review.~

First Love by James Patterson (Book Review)

First Love
by James Patterson and Emily Raymond
published in 2013

An extraordinary portrait of true love that will move anyone who has a first love story of their own. Axi Moore is a "good girl": She studies hard, stays out of the spotlight, and doesn't tell anyone how all she really wants is to run away from it all. The only person she can tell is her best friend, Robinson--who she also happens to be madly in love with.

When Axi spontaneously invites Robinson to come with her on an impulsive cross-country road trip, she breaks the rules for the first time in her life. But the adventure quickly turns from carefree to out of control after the teens find themselves on the run from the police. And when Robinson suddenly collapses, Axi has to face the truth that this trip might be his last.

A remarkably moving tale very personal to James Patterson's own past, FIRST LOVE is testament to the power of first love--and how it can change the rest of your life.

I was familiar with James Patterson having read a handful of the Women's Murder Club books years ago, but I wasn't sure what to expect with this New Adult novel.  I noticed it one night at work and just thought it looked good so thought I would check it out.  I was not disappointed.

I loved Axi and Robinson's relationship.  They were friends who shared a very sad past.  Something that not a lot of kids their age would be able to relate to, and it had bonded them together.  Axi only has her father at home, and he doesn't know whether she is there or not most of the time, so when she got this idea for a cross-country road trip, she knew she wouldn't have to worry about him.  Robinson lives with an uncle, and that is about as much as Axi knows, but she also knows she can't make this trip without him.

Axi thinks she has it all planned out, but before they can even leave town, Robinson has derailed her plans on how they are going to travel and she finds herself on the back of a motorcycle!  Through the next few days/weeks Axi finds herself living more and more in the moment, but also realizing that she is going to have to face the future. Robinson is very cavalier and carefree, not wanting to face the future at all.  He eventually leads Axi to his parents' house on the East Coast. It is here that they both come to terms with what the future holds.

Heartbreaking first love story.

The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate (Book Review)

The One and Only Ivan
by Katherine Applegate
first published in 2012

Ivan is an easygoing gorilla. Living at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, he has grown accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain. He rarely misses his life in the jungle. In fact, he hardly ever thinks about it at all.

Instead, Ivan thinks about TV shows he’s seen and about his friends Stella, an elderly elephant, and Bob, a stray dog. But mostly Ivan thinks about art and how to capture the taste of a mango or the sound of leaves with color and a well-placed line.

Then he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from her family, and she makes Ivan see their home—and his own art—through new eyes. When Ruby arrives, change comes with her, and it’s up to Ivan to make it a change for the better.

Katherine Applegate blends humor and poignancy to create Ivan’s unforgettable first-person narration in a story of friendship, art, and hope.

I read this book for the Newbery Challenge.  It won the Newbery award in 2013.

When I first started it, I didn't know how I was ever going to get into it - as the dialogue was between Ivan, Stella and Bob - a gorilla, elephant and dog.  I thought it was going to be very childlike.  Well, I thought wrong.

It wasn't long before I was genuinely interested in the well-being of these three friends.  They cared about one another and were really more family than friends.  This family expands when a baby elephant is brought into this strange zoo-in-a-mall.  Her name is Ruby and Stella takes her under her wing.  Unfortunately Stella is old and her health is failing.  She teaches Ruby as much as she can before she passes.  Ivan does promise her that he will make sure that Ruby does not stay at the mall forever like they have.

With that promise on his mind and in his heart, he starts a campaign to try to get people to understand that they want to be outside with other animals like them.  He has been creating "art" that is sold at the mall for years, but now he starts to draw a bigger picture using many pieces of paper.  He hopes the young girl who always comes to visit him will be able to figure out what he is trying to say.

I really enjoyed reading this book, and found it even more interesting when I discovered it was loosely patterned after a real gorilla named Ivan.  This gorilla also lived at a mall for twenty seven years before the public outcry that sent him to live at Zoo Atlanta with other primates.  There are some great themes here regarding friendship, bravery and cruelty to animals.  And yes, it does deal with death, but I think it handles it in a way that young children can handle.

Her Secret Cowboy by Marin Thomas (Book Review)

Her Secret Cowboy
by Marin Thomas
Published in 2014

Years ago, Will Cash wasn’t interested in being a dad. So Marsha Bugler left town to raise her baby alone. But when her father’s health begins to fail, she realizes she needs to return to Arizona—and introduce Will to his boy. Marsha is nervous to face Will not only because she lied, but because she’s never stopped thinking about her cowboy crush.

Will is shocked to discover he has a son. And he can hardly believe the changes in Marsha. She’s strong, sexy and a Ph.D. while Will’s still a part-time cowboy living in a bunkhouse with his brothers. What does he have to offer her and his teenage son? Will has a lot to prove if he’s going to get what he wants—the family he never knew he had.

I read this book as part of Harlequin's 'Just Can't Get Enough' Campaign.  I must say that I really enjoyed it!  Our main characters are Marsha and Will.  They only had one date - prom night their senior year.  Marsha had had a crush on Will forever, and had arranged the date through Will's brother Buck.  You see, she was a pastor's daughter and he was the resident bad boy. This one night would change the course of their lives forever.

Marsha leaves town to go to college, letting Will believe she has 'taken care of the baby'.  In reality, she goes off to college, without even telling her parents that she is pregnant.  She is determined to do it on her own, and get the degree that she has always wanted. Her parents don't find out about the baby, Ryan, until he is already born, and they soon stop asking her who the father is.  She does come back for visits, but always manages to stay clear of Will -- until she decides not to.

You see, her father is dying of cancer, and she has decided that Ryan will need another male in his life.  You see a pattern here?  Marsha has taken all the decision making away from Will, and now that Ryan is a teenager she is going to introduce him to his father?  And what about how Will is going to react to having a son that he is just now finding out about?  As you can see, this is a recipe for what could be a huge disaster.

What Marsha or Will doesn't count on is that they might actually have feelings for each other.  With them both tiptoeing around trying not to upset Marsha's dad or Ryan you wonder if the truth is ever going to come out!

This was a quick read and had a lot of heart.  Both families, Marsha's and Will's were very close knit and you could see that they cared deeply for one another.   I liked the way the story was resolved and look forward to reading more about the Cash brothers in the future!

Just Can't Get Enough!

I am excited to be a part of Harlequin's "Just Can't Get Enough" Campaign for 2014!  Above you can see the themes for the year.  This isn't your grandma's Harlequin.  I hope that I am not stepping on any toes, because that is not my intention.   I read Harlequin's 20 years ago and to me, at that time, they were fluff, usually followed the same format, so were pretty predictable.  Well, let me tell you - time's have changed!  I very much enjoyed reading the two featured titles this month and can't wait to see what the following months will bring.  Below are the two "Sexy Heroes" books for the month of February.  I will be reviewing them in separate posts.  I will also be bringing you an interview with Tawny Weber, one of this month's featured authors!

It's Monday! What are you reading? (Feb 3, 2014)

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is a weekly meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey

Where did January go?  I didn't get near as much read this month as I wanted to!  How about you?  Did anyone reach their reading goals for January?

Glasses did help this week - but still ended up with a headache on Friday - I think it is time to visit the chiropractor!  Seems to be coming from my upper back/neck.  My "free day for reading" last week didn't garner me as much reading time as I would have liked!  Such is the life of a mom. . .

Temp today:  1 degree F, feels like 1 degree F - but hey - at least we are above 0!

Currently reading (still):

Finished Through the Ever Night by Veronica Rossi - loved it!

The God of Small Things
by Arundhati Roy

This is good - but not sure I have the wherewithall to stay with it. . .

Will probably start this one this week:

Into the Still Blue
by Veronica Rossi

The earth-shattering conclusion to Veronica Rossi's "masterpiece" Under the Never Sky trilogy and sequel to the New York Timesbestselling Through the Ever Night (Examiner.com).

Their love and their leadership have been tested. Now it's time for Perry and Aria to unite the Dwellers and the Outsiders in one last desperate attempt to bring balance to their world.

The race to the Still Blue has reached a stalemate. Aria and Perry are determined to find this last safe-haven from the Aether storms before Sable and Hess do-and they are just as determined to stay together.

Meanwhile, time is running out to rescue Cinder, who was abducted by Hess and Sable for his unique abilities. And when Roar returns to camp, he is so furious with Perry that he won't even look at him, and Perry begins to feel like they have already lost.

Out of options, Perry and Aria assemble a team to mount an impossible rescue mission-because Cinder isn't just the key to unlocking the Still Blue and their only hope for survival, he's also their friend. And in a dying world, the bonds between people are what matter most.

In this final book in her stunning Under the Never Sky trilogy, Veronica Rossi raises the stakes to their absolute limit and brings her epic love story to an unforgettable close.

Bathroom Book:

Finished First Love - it quickly became my "carry where ever I go, have to finish book."

The View from Saturday
by E.L. Konigsburg

How had Mrs. Olinski chosen her sixth-grade Academic Bowl team?  She had a number of answers. But were any of them true?  How had she really chosen Noah and Nadia and Ethan and Julian?  And why did they make such a good team?

It was a surprise to a lot of people when Mrs. Olinski's team won the sixth-grade Academic Bowl contest at Epiphany Middle School.  It was an even bigger surprise when they beat the seventh grade and the eighth grade, too.  And when they went on to even greater victories, everyone began to ask:  How did it happen?

It happened at least partly because Noah had been the best man (quite by accident) at the wedding of Ethan's grandmother and Nadia's grandfather.  It happened because Nadia discovered that she could not let a lot of baby turtles die.  It happened when Ethan could not let Julian face disaster alone.  And it happened because Julian valued something important in himself and saw in the other three something he also valued.

Mrs. Olinski, returning to teaching after having been injured in an automobile accident, found that her Academic Bowl team became her answer to finding confidence and success.  What she did not know, at least at first, was that her team knew more than she did the answer to why they had been chosen.

This is a tale about a team, a class, a school, a series of contests and, set in the midst of this, four jewel-like short stories -- one for each of the team members -- that ask questions and demonstrate surprising answers.

E-read:

This is up in the air right now - Never really got into Last Night at the Blue Angel.  I think it will be a good book, just not the right time for me - might give it another shot later this year. I have a couple of E-books to read for review this month so will probably start one of these - Which would you choose?

As far as my projects go - I did get the hat finished for the snowman, but spent another week of doing nothing on the needlepoint. . .

I need to do the scarf and add his eyes now. . .

I may be putting this one away as I need to get started on a project for which I am a pilot stitcher.
