Vote for my friend Shelley! Get extra entries in my Giveaways!

I belong to a local chapter of MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) through my church.  I have been involved with the group for the last 4 years - the last 3 of which I have either been a table mom or co-coordinator of the finance position.  Shelly, a former MOPS mom, lost her husband Chuck last year to cancer.  She is the mother of twin boys.  She has had an au pair helping her since her husband passed away so that she could go back to school full time.  I hope that you will take a couple minutes to watch her video and vote - giving her the opportunity to win $7000 which would go for towards some of her au pair expenses.

Vote Here

You will just need to leave your email address to vote - and then confirm your email by clicking the link they send you.  If you will take the time to do this - I will give you an extra 5 entries in every contest I have going throughout the month of May.  Just leave me a comment on this post and I will make sure that you get the extra entries!  Thank you so much for helping this much deserving mom!

3's

Why do they always say that things happen in 3's? For whatever reason, I found that to be true the last 2 weeks.

Last week, after dropping my daughter off at school, I was sitting at a red light waiting to turn left when another car came around the corner too fast and slid into me. No one was hurt - but the estimate for my car is $1400.

The next day I took my little miniature schnauzer, Colby, into the vet and we discovered that she has diabetes - so I now get to give her 2 insulin shots a day - for the rest of her life!

Tuesday of this week my son started running a fever (103) so took him to the doctor and he has strep - and because of my disease they tested me also - and I have strep too!

I am finally feeling better today and hope to get caught up on some of my posts!

Rambling

I just wanted to give everyone an update - I was supposed to start an exercise program yesterday using Denise's Daily Dozen. Unfortunately I have had a flair up of Wegener's and have been very short of breath - to the point that I finally went to my doctor today and was started on Prednisone... again... It has been over a year since I was finally able to get off the steroid, so I am hoping that a quick burst of steroids will be all that I need. It has put a hold on my plans for an exercise program though.

I am also behind on posting any winners - I am going to post them here hopefully some time in the next 24 hours, but emails may not go out immediately - so if you see your name in any of the winner's posts, please feel free to email me.

Happy Reading everyone!

Cherokee Legend

Cherokee Legend

Do you know the legend of the Cherokee Indian youth's rite of Passage?

His father takes him into the forest, blindfolds him an leaves him alone.
He is required to sit on a stump the whole night and not remove the blindfold until the rays of the morning sun shine through it. He cannot cry out for help to anyone.

Once he survives the night, he is a MAN.

He cannot tell the other boys of this experience, because each lad must come into manhood on his own.

The boy is naturally terrified. He can hear all kinds of noises. Wild beasts must surely be all around him . Maybe even some human might do him

harm. The wind blew the grass and earth, and shook his stump, but he sat
stoically, never removing the blindfold. It would be the only way he could become a man!

Finally, after a horrific night the sun appeared and he removed his
blindfold.

It was then that he discovered his father sitting on the stump next to him.

He had been at watch the entire night, protecting his son from harm.

We, too, are never alone.

Even when we don't know it, God is watching over us, Sitting on the stump beside us.

When trouble comes, all we have to do is reach out to Him.

If you liked this story, pass it on.

If not, you took off your blindfold before dawn.

Moral of the story:

Just because you can't see God,

Doesn't mean He is not there.

"For we walk by faith, not by sight."

My mother-in-law sent me this email this morning - and I really needed to hear it today - so I wanted to pass it on.

I am being featured at Scene of the Blog today!

Chocolate as a Stress Buster? Oh Yeah!

Remedy SuperStress with Chocolate
By Roberta Lee M.D.,
Author of The SuperStress Solution

If you love chocolate, you're not alone. It turns out that the average person in the United States consumes approximately 12 pounds of chocolate a year. That might sound like a lot of chocolate, but I actually recommend that my patients -- especially those who are chronically stressed or what I would describe as SuperStressed -- indulge in 1 ounce of high quality and high cocoa mass chocolate a day, and that actually adds up to well more than 12 pounds over the course of the year. Sure, chocolate is a calorie laden food (with most of the calories coming from the cocoa butter), but in my opinion, the benefits of this treat outweigh the caloric load as long as you keep the portions small. Here are the benefits:

  • On a gram for gram basis, chocolate has a terrifically high concentration of antioxidants known as flavonoids. More than berries and spinach, even. Flavonoids have been shown to lower high blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease and strokes.
  • Chocolate is rich in magnesium and potassium, two minerals that help promote the "relaxation response," as well as iron and zinc, which are minerals that many people don't often get enough of during the course of the day. Chocolate also contains a good amount of selenium, which enhances immune health.
  • Chocolate contains several psychoactive compounds being studied and debated as responsible for the mood lift many of us experience when eating it. First, there's phenylethylamine (PEA), a natural trace amine that is a stimulant that is elevated in the brain when we are in love and is low when we are depressed. Secondly, there's theobromine, a compound that imparts energy and a sense of alertness. Finally, chocolate contains a small amount of a chemical known as N-arachidonoylethanolamine, a substance that keeps our endogenous happiness molecules -- or endorphins -- from breaking down. In other words, if we are happy, we just might stay happier longer with a little chocolate.
Of course, there's also ample consumer-proven evidence that chocolate tastes good, and that eating it can provide a little respite -- an oasis of pleasure and calm -- from our otherwise hectic days! And to me, that's what's so special about this sweet treat. I find chocolate has the ability to enhance sensory recruitment in every way. It's so inexpensive to have a piece of chocolate and it's so pleasurable, that if that's something you like and that's part of what living well is about, I say: go for it. The ideal cocoa mass is 75% or more -- this will be clear on the label and is most often found in dark chocolate -- and the ideal portion is 1 ounce (about 1/3 of an average bar or roughly the size of the palm of a woman's hand). Doctor's orders!

To reduce stress, and avoid SuperStress, try this today:

Simple as it sounds; focused breathing -- during which you think about your breath as you inhale and exhale -- is a very effective stress-management technique. A slow, full breath triggers physical and cognitive changes that promote relaxation. Deep breathing helps release tension and anxiety and is a great energizer because the deeper the breath, the more your body is flooded with life-fueling oxygen. A full breath begins with the diaphragm pushing downward so that the stomach extends out. As your lungs fill with air, your chest expands. When you exhale, the reverse occurs -- your chest settles first and then your stomach.

* When anxiety strikes or you find yourself focusing on negative thoughts, immediately exhale through your mouth.
* Now, open your lungs, and breathe in through your nose, drawing in a fresh, cleansing air to the count of four.
* Exhale again slowly to the count of five.
* Repeat four times.

Is it H1N1?

My son (who will be 5 in 12 days) started coughing yesterday and complained of a stomach ache off and on - then about 6pm last night started running a fever. I took him in to the doctor first thing this morning and left feeling worse than when I went in. He basically told me that the only flu's they are seeing right now are H1N1 as regular flu season hasn't hit yet. Since our state just got the H1N1 shot yesterday - he said it is already too late - that we are already in the middle of the epidemic and that shot takes about 4 weeks to reach its maximum effectiveness.

So - he did a nasal swab on him and they have sent it out - results should be back tomorrow. Unfortunately I now have to worry about him - and the possibility of my other 2 girls getting it - and then there is me. . .

I have a disease called Wegener's Granulomatosa. I was diagnosed about 15 years ago - and have been taken to the emergency room 3 times by ambulance - hospitalized 3 times (only once from the ambulance trip), have had blood clots, seizures, pneumonia, voice loss for years at a time (I'm not kidding), arthritis and even just stopped breathing once - they think my throat swelled or collapsed or something. . . Anyway - Wegener's affects nose, throat, lungs (so - respiratory) and kidneys. Thankfully I have never had kidney involvement. The treatment I am on is an immunosupressant drug called Methotrexate - So, in addition to being at high risk - I also have a lowered immune system. So - if my son has H1N1 - what are my chances of avoiding it? Anyone wanna make a bet?

And for the curious bunch out there - for more information on Wegener's.

Also - Bobbie at Book Reviews by Bobbie had a great post on H1N1 today..

Have I Been Missed?

I have a terrible sinus infection with migraine that has kept me off the computer for most of the week. The only post that was done in "real" time was the book review yesterday - all the other posts about books were done last weekend (thankfully!) I missed WoW, Friday's Finds, my Thursday Kid's Korner - and I even had a Library Loot for this week! I also have 2 new giveaways to post - one for a new office chair. And tomorrow I am supposed to be doing the Read-a-thon!

So -I gave up and went to the doctor today. I am hoping that the antibiotics he gave me will kick in tonight and that I will be able to read headache free tomorrow! (Otherwise, I am going to be SOOOOO behind in my reviews!)

Well, that's it for tonight - I think I am going to bed. . . .

Book Blogger Appreciation Week: Meet the Mom Behind Chronicle of an Infant Bibliophile

Welcome everyone! It has been very cool to see so many posts highlighting different blogs and books! I missed the kick-off yesterday where you were supposed to highlight different blogs that didn't make the short list. It seems like my world has exploded this month and I can't seem to get it together! Oh well - no stress - this blog is for fun!

I am interviewing Lynn from Chronicle of an Infant Bibliophile today.

Hi Lynn, and welcome to Books and Needlepoint! To start things out, tell us why you started blogging and how long you have been doing it.

I started blogging earlier this year. Our son has always loved books, and I thought it would be fun to keep track of all of the books he'd read, and to share his opinions about books with other parents. We have the whole list of books he's read (288 so far) in a list, with all of the reviews accessible by clicking on the title -- http://infantbibliophile.blogspot.com/2009/01/test_6425.html. I had also just moved to a new city where we knew almost no one, and was trying to entertain myself as a stay at home mom, so I found the blog was a nice creative outlet for me. It helped that typing is fairly quiet, and I blog during my son's naptime(s).

Let me tell you - Lynn's list is amazing. She also has it broken down in her sidebar into themes of the books - like dogs, cats, counting, etc - so if you are ever looking for a kid's book on a particular subject - this is definitely the blog to turn to!

This isn't the only blog that Lynn has though - so let's see if she will tell us about her other ones.

My favorite hobby before becoming a mother was quilting. I've toyed for years with the idea of starting a quilting blog. I gave it a try a few months ago, but decided I didn't have time for it, so I've set it to private for now. The other blog I created is called Crazy Allergy Mama (http://crazyallergymama.blogspot.com). It focuses on parenting a child with food allergies. My son is allergic to wheat, egg, milk, nuts, and sesame. I post there sporadically -- much less often that at Chronicle of an Infant Bibliophile.

I am impressed that anyone has time for more than one blog - but with a little one it is even more impressive. I would love to have a blog for just my needlework - but that ain't happenin'!

Outside of reading, what are your other hobbies? (I want to hear more about that quilting!)

I love quilting -- dreaming up quilts, shopping for fabric (especially that part), planning, cutting, piecing, and quilting. I love every stage in different ways. But I find it a challenge to fit the hobby into motherhood. My son loves to sit on my lap while I use the machine, actually, but it is hard to find the time to plan and cut the necessary fabric to be ready to sew together. Growing up, all of the women in my family were crafty, so I've also at different times done crocheting, knitting, scrapbooking, cross-stitching, and plenty of other crafts. My husband and I also love photography -- lately mostly of our little guy -- and games.

I have always dreamed about doing a quilt - but the worst part to me about any kind of sewing is cutting all the pieces out - and quilts have A LOT of pieces! You should combine photography with your quilting and make one of those memory quilts!

This was kind of an 'off-the-wall' question - but I was really curious! Why do you love the consonants B, D, M, N like it says in your profile?

The profile refers to my son (the "Infant Bibliophile"), who could only really say those consonants when he was first learning to talk. He's saying more and more words now, so the list of letters is growing. I guess I should update the profile!

Is this the first BBAW that you have participated in?

Yes, it is. I'm excited to be joining the fun!

I actually stole this last question from Lynn - it is one that she asked me and I thought it pertained very well to her! What were your favorite children's books when you were a child and/or what were your children's favorites?

As far as my favorite childhood books, some of the ones I remember are: The Monster at the End of This Book, Harold and the Purple Crayon, Call of the Wild, Curious George, Danny and the Dinosaur, Mr. Popper's Penguins, the Mouse and the Motorcycle, and the Ramona Quimby books.

My son, like yours, loves anything with transportation vehicles! He also loves to be quizzed about finding things, so Counting Colors, I-Spy, and Richard Scarry books are a big hit. But he enjoys a good picture book too.

Be sure to check out Lynn's blog - and add her to your blogroll!

Random Thoughts From People Our Age (40+)

My sister sent these to me in an e-mail and I have tried to pick out the ones that elicited the biggest chuckle from me!

-More often than not, when someone is telling me a story all I can think about is that I can't wait for them to finish so that I can tell my own story that's not only better, but also more directly involves me.

-Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you're wrong.

-Have you ever been walking down the street and realized that you're going in the complete opposite direction of where you are supposed to be going? But instead of just turning a 180 and walking back in the direction from which you came, you have to first do something like check your watch or phone or make a grand arm gesture and mutter to yourself to ensure that no one in the surrounding area thinks you're crazy by randomly switching directions on the sidewalk.

-I totally take back all those times I didn't want to nap when I was younger.

-Is it just me, or are 80% of the people in the "people you may know" feature on Facebook people that I do know, but I deliberately choose not to be friends with?

-There is a great need for sarcasm font.

-Sometimes, I'll watch a movie that I watched when I was younger and suddenly realize I had no idea what the heck was going on when I first saw it.

-How the heck are you supposed to fold a fitted sheet?

-I would rather try to carry 10 plastic grocery bags in each hand than take 2 trips to bring my groceries in.

- I have a hard time deciphering the fine line between boredom and hunger.

- My brother's Municipal League baseball team is named the Stepdads. Seeing as none of the guys on the team are actual stepdads, I inquired about the name. He explained, "Cuz we beat you, and you hate us." Classy, bro.

- How many times is it appropriate to say "What?" before you just nod and smile because you still didn't hear what they said?

- I love the sense of camaraderie when an entire line of cars teams up to prevent an *** from cutting in at the front. Stay strong, brothers!

-What would happen if I hired two private investigators to follow each other?

- While driving yesterday I saw a banana peel in the road and instinctively swerved to avoid it...thanks Mario Kart.

- MapQuest really needs to start their directions on #5. Pretty sure I know how to get out of my neighborhood.

- Obituaries would be a lot more interesting if they told you how the person died.

-I can't remember the last time I wasn't at least kind of tired.

- Bad decisions make good stories

-If Carmen San Diego and Waldo ever got together, their offspring would probably just be completely invisible.

-Why is it that during an ice-breaker, when the whole room has to go around and say their name and where they are from, I get so incredibly nervous? Like I know my name, I know where I'm from, this shouldn't be a problem....

-You never know when it will strike, but there comes a moment at work when you've made up your mind that you just aren't doing anything productive for the rest of the day.

-Can we all just agree to ignore whatever comes after DVDs? I don't want to have to restart my collection.

-There's no worse feeling than that millisecond you're sure you are going to die after leaning your chair back a little too far.

- "Do not machine wash or tumble dry" means I will never wash this ever.

-Sometimes I'll look down at my watch 3 consecutive times and still not know what time it is.

-I keep some people's phone numbers in my phone just so I know not to answer when they call.

-Even under ideal conditions people have trouble locating their car keys in a pocket, hitting the G-spot, and Pinning the Tail on the Donkey - but I’d bet my ass everyone can find and push the Snooze button from 3 feet away, in about 1.7 seconds, eyes closed, first time every time...

-I disagree with Kay Jewelers. I would bet on any given Friday or Saturday night more kisses begin with Miller Lites than Kay.

Ok - now you can't tell me that you haven't done some of these! I want to know what your favorite one was! So tell me now.

What Book Are You?

I found this book quiz over at Lost in Books that was quick to take and looked like fun - Here is the book that I am - I don't understand the last sentence of the description though... If you decide to take the quiz - come back here and let me know so I can come see what book you are!

You're Confessions!

by St. Augustine

You're a sinner, you're a saint, you do not feel ashamed. Well, you
might feel a little ashamed of your past, but it did such a good job of teaching you
what not to do. Now you've become a devout Christian and have spent more time
ruminating on the world to come rather than worldly pleasures. Your realizations and
ability to change will bring reverence upon you despite your hedonistic transgressions.
Florida will honor you most in the end.

Weekend Track Meet and Dinner Theater

This past weekend my daughter Lexi was very busy! She performed with her show choir both Friday and Saturday nights at a dinner theater at her school. All day on Saturday she was also at the sectional track meet - she throws discus.

Lexi had never been in track before this year - never even picked up a discus before April - yet she took first in one meet - and took third at sectionals out of 18 girls (9 schools)! I have some pictures of her below

I don't have any pictures of her performing at dinner theater as flash photography wasn't allowed - but there was a raffle and we came home with two prizes~!

One raffle was for a bag containing a notebook, puzzlebook, pen, flavored water, chocolate and a $10 gift card to Borders!

The second raffle had an Evinrude hat and T-Shirt and a gift certificate for a pie at Baker's Square.

Needless to say - we had a great Saturday!

FYI for future posts

As I mentioned a few days ago - as the days get longer, my time on the computer gets shorter - so quicker posts will have to be the answer. I am going to start doing posts on mailed books, purchased books, or giveaways I have won as I receive them. I think these are the names I am going with:

ARC Arrival - ARC's I receive from various places
Tome Travelers - used books that I buy
Giveaway Grabs - books that I win

I still am undecided about Library books - probably will still go with Library Loot - but it probably won't be on specific day. I also need a name for new books that I might buy. . .

Ok - not sure anyone cares - but if you see these titles to posts, that's what they are for. It mainly just takes out Mailbox Monday/In Your Mailbox - This post just seemed to take a lot of time to prepare each week.

Bye for now!~
