"But then things changed. Mary Ellen started crying a lot. She tries to hide it from me the best she can, but every once in a while I'll catch her just staring at me, her eyes all swollen and wet with tears. Whenever this happens, all I can do is tell her that I'm sorry, even if I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be apologizing for." Jason sighed deeply; in that moment Cole could see that he was struggling to control his own emotions. "I don't think she'll be able to make it to the station tomorrow. I'm afraid it might kill her to watch me go." (p168, The Moon Looked Down by Dorothy Garlock)

She's asleep in her bed, just don't wake up. I grab her arm; it's like a tray of ice. She's dead.* (p352 The Four Corners of the Sky)

As you can see, I am reading The Four Corners of the Sky by Michael Malone. I am liking it so far, though it has a lot of what seems like unnecessary information at this point. I am hoping that as the story comes together, I will see the reason for everything. As for the quote above, I am not there yet, so I have no idea to what it is referring. It is a teaser for me as well! Is anyone else reading this book - which is being released today?

Teaser Tuesday is hosted at Should be Reading. Come on over and share your teaser, too!

It was a cool, wet day in late May when Obie Poole
passed away. He was resting in his bed when his heart, as though it had waited for that one moment from the day he'd been born, stopped beating in his chest.

Less than a second later, the apple was in Duke's hand. He hadn't seen the boy throw it, didn't see it flying toward him. There was just a golden zip out of the corner of his eye, and his fingers clutched instinctively once the skin of his palm touched the skin of the fruit. (p51, Stealing Home)

"I'm late." The words resounded outside her body, as if someone else might be reminding her of the PJ she knew she should be, the PJ who should fight to extricate herself from Boone's magnetic pull. She managed to turn away, and as she did, the hallway bowed, as if made of gelatin. She took another step; it wobbled, and she ricocheted off the lockers.

The man's breath smelled like clean dirt. Like most Middle Easterners, he valued cleanliness far more than your typical westerner - even here in the desert, assuming he hadn't been out long enough to have been driven to a city, the man would take care to bathe each day. Ryan could still smell the soap on him. (p26, uncorrected proof, Boneman's Daughter by Ted Dekker)

But only if you see one close up, out of the water, do you get any real sense of how enormous it is, for then all that is normally concealed, the gigantic bulk of the ship that is under the waterline, becomes visible. It went up, and up and up, until I thought its very top was lost in the clouds. (Stone's Fall by Iain Pears - uncorrected proof, p 235)

Nikki, however, had better watch hers, because if what I was beginning to think about her was true, I'd personally take her down. She'd be in a black wedding gown, all right. But she'd take my husband with her over my dead body. (p255, Deadly Charm by Claudia Mair Burney) - (ok, I know, I gave you 3 sentences - but I just had to include that last one!)

Rita Kay had invited him to attend the Seaside Festival of the Arts with her two weeks ago, and he hadn't wanted to break the date at the last minute, even though he hadn't been all that into the idea of going out tonight after pulling his caveman bit with Babette this afternoon. He'd much rather have continued playing caveman, or at least spent a little time determining why he had. (Flirting with Temptation, p176)

Not that she had ever been on medication. Her father's daughter, indeed. Ric Fallows bragged about how he never took so much as an aspirin or antihistamine, and while Cassandra knew her father's stance was a kind of bigotry, born of serendipitous good health, she couldn't help absorbing his views. It amused her, a little, when he had to start taking Lipitor. (From Life Sentences, p78)

Palmer set alone in the media room with the shades all drawn, the glowing black eyeball rimmed in fierce crimson and ringed with flaming white staring out at him from a seventy-two-inch viewing screen. This room, like his home in Dark Harbor and the cabin of his medical helicopter, was kept regulated at exactly sixty-two degrees. (p91 - The Strain by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan)

My two teasers: Unlike prior transports, the string wavered following the power surge, too small and too fast for anyone to see, but even as the string dissipated it shot the pod toward the time-space solid. Benjamin felt himself thrown into a void where he seemed to be floating; then the gravity was terrific, pushing him down, down against the seat. (p 70 - A Lever Long Enough ~ Amy Deardon)

The Ethiopian army was visible in force, tanks and armored cars parked at key junctions, checkpoints everywhere. We were never searched, since the driver's papers showed the tires we carried were to supply the Ethiopian army. (From Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese, p368 - Uncorrected Proof)

This week's teaser comes from Scream for Me by Karen Rose - and it has been a terrific book so far. I have less than 100 pages left and hope to finish it today!
Then she remembered his hands on her shoulders, supporting her when her knees wanted to buckle. Maybe Daniel Vartanian was really just a very nice man. (p127)
