The Women in Jesus' Life is a six week study of the women Jesus encountered during His life and ministry. Jesus felt the pain of those who grieved; spoke to the unacceptable; healed the sick; extended grace to the sinner; made the crippled whole. Through the lessons in this study, you'll experience the compassionate and merciful nature of our Savior. It's encouraging material that emphazises application and the lessons are manageable for today's busy women.

by Larry Strauss
(from Meryl Moss Media)

A scream of metal on an icy road during a dark February night in 1956 and all the promise of the up-and-coming LB Quintet evaporated like cigarette smoke in a jazz joint. Pianist Billy Heron lay dead on the very night he broke free of his own inhibitions and found his musical voice.

Twenty years later, a passing comment from a recovering drug dealer drives his daughter, trumpeter Didi Heron, into the relentless pursuit of the impossible -- the vanished tape of her father's very last session.  Larry Strauss's novel, Now's the Time, is a jazz journey in 4/4 time as Didi hunts down notable musicians of her father's day and she searches for the tape that could give her back a little piece of her father and extend his musical legacy.

Didi's journey takes unexpected twists and turns as she grows close to an elderly drummer who was once her father's worst enemy and supposedly in possession of the tape. Also dogging her heels is the big record executive who is financing her journey and expects a return on his investment, the memories of the father she thinks she knows, and her own dream of becoming a female jazz trumpeter in the male-dominated art.

In the aftermath of Sophie's ordeal, Weston will make some uncharacteristic decisions to distance himself from the past in an attempt to change the future.

But, while venturing into the improbable, the present sneaks up in a chilling way that will lead to Wes' unexpected submission.  Suddenly, Sophie will find herself watching as both his immortal secret and his own existence are threatened.

Continuously intriguing, The Broken Lake takes readers to a place where eternal bonds confront a division that is sure to leave everyone wondering whom they can trust.

by Trish Ryan
(from Hachette Books)

In her first book, He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not, Trish Ryan chronicled the ways in which finding faith led her to the happily-ever-after ending that had eluded her for so long.  Only it wasn't an ending. It was a beginning.

In A Maze of Grace, Ryan picks up where she left off, sharing the early years of her marriage and the challenges that came with it. With humor and wit, she recounts the moments that left her looking for answers, from temptations regarding fidelity and the anxiety of shifting body image to the awkward nature of following Jesus in a decidedly secular city, and a series of struggles (depression, trying to conceive) that made her wonder if God had lost her file.

With appealing candor, Ryan sweeps the reader into her life and ponders questions and issues that we all face, dropping nuggets of wisdom along the way that are sure to inspire, encourage, and help women in all walks of life.

Nora Grey should have known her life was far from perfect. Even though her boyfriend, Patch, also happens to be her literal guardian angel (who, despite the title, is far from angelic), things are not looking up. First there is summer school and facing the nightmare of her enemy Marcie Millar as her lab partner. Then Patch starts to pull away with no explanation. And finally, she is having nightmares and visions about her father's murder.

As Nora chooses to ignore her better instincts and delves deeper into the mystery of her father's death, she also begins to question whether her Nephilim bloodline had something to do with it, which casts more doubt on her relationship (or lack thereof) with Patch. Does he know more than he lets on? Why does he always seem to be standing in front of the answers she is looking for? And if he really is her guardian angel, why is her life always in danger?

Lacey Terwilliger's shock and humiliation over her husband's philandering prompt her to add some bonus material to Mike's company newsletter: stunning Technicolor descriptions of the special brand of "administrative support" his receptionist gives him.  The detailed mass e-mail to Mike's family, friends, and clients blows up in her face, and before one can say "instant urban legend," Lacey has become the pariah of her small Kentucky town, a media punch line, and the defendant in Mike's defamation lawsuit.

Her seemingly perfect life up in flames, Lacey retreats to her family's lakeside cabin, only to encounter an aggravating neighbor named Monroe. A hunky crime novelist with a low tolerance for drama, Monroe is not thrilled about a newly divorced woman moving in next door. But with time, beer, and a screen door to the nose, a cautious friendship develops into something infinitely more satisfying.

Lacey has to make a decision about her long-term living arrangements, though. Should she take a job writing caustic divorce newsletters for paying clients, or move on with her own life, pursuing more literary aspirations? Can she find happiness with a man who tells her what he thinks and not what she wants to hear?  And will she ever be able to resist saying one. . . last. . . thing?

Superheroes have come a long way since the "Man of Steel" was introduced in 1938.  This brilliant new collection features original stories and novellas from some of today's most exciting voices in comics, science fiction, and fantasy.  Each marvelously inventive tale shows us just how far our classic crusaders have evolved -- and how the greatest of heroes are, much like ourselves, all too human.

Why can't you choose what you forget. . . and what you remember?

There's a lot Zoey would like to forget. Like how her father has knocked up his twenty-four-year old girlfriend.  Like Zoey's fear that the whole town will find out about her mom's nervous breakdown. Like darkly handsome bad boy Doug taunting her at school.  Feeling like her life is about to become a complete mess, Zoey fights back the only way she knows how, using her famous attention to detail to make sure she's the perfect daughter, the perfect student, and the perfect girlfriend to ultra-popular football player Brandon.

But then Zoey is in a car crash, and the next day there's one thing she can't remember at all -- the entire night before.  Did she go parking with Brandon, like she planned?  And if so, why does it seem like Brandon is avoiding her? And why is Doug -- of all people -- suddenly acting as if something significant happened between the two of them?  Zoey dimly remembers Doug pulling her from the wreck, but he keeps referring to what happened that night as if it was more, and it terrifies Zoey to admit how much is a blank to her.  Controlled, meticulous Zoey is quickly losing her grip on the all-important details of her life -- a life that seems strangely empty of Brandon, and strangely full of Doug.

"But, Daddy? Who will live with me in heaven?"

Doctor Simon Bailey's previously perfect life is shattered when his seven year old daughter is given months to live.

Whilst he can almost come to terms with her impending death and feels he may one day deal with never being able to see her again, he can not stand the idea of his child facing death alone.

He answers her question in a moment of desperation, testing his marriage, his professional judgement and his sanity to the limit. He offers to go with her.

As cracks form in the foundations of a family that once appeared unbreakable - we wonder, as do his loved ones - will he really make the ultimate sacrifice?

Journeying from the plastic palaces of Disneyland, to the funeral pyres of the Hindu Sati and combining poignant moments of both humour and pain, Simon's Choice is a is a penetrating account of parenthood at the sharp-end.

by Samantha Bee
(from Gallery Books/Simon and Schuster)

As the Most Senior Correspondent on The Daily Show, Samantha Bee has built a career out of coaxing people into caricaturing themselves. Now in her first book, I Know I Am, But What Are You? Samantha turns the spotlight toward her own imperfect life as relentlessly as she skewers her hapless interview subjects.

Critics have called her "sweet, adorable, and vicious." But there is so much more to be said about Samantha Bee.  For one, she's Canadian. Whatever that means. And now, she opens up for the very first time about her checkered Canadian past. With charming candor, she admits to her Lennie from Of Mice and Men-style love of baby animals, her teenage crime spree as one half of a car-thieving couple (Bonnie and Clyde in Bermuda shorts and braces), and the fact that strangers seem compelled to show her their genitals. She also details her intriguing career history, which includes stints working in a frame store, at a penis clinic, and as a Japanese anime character in a touring children's show.

Samantha delves into all these topics and many more in this thoroughly hilarious, unabashedly frank collection of personal essays. Whether detailing the creepiness that ensues when strangers assume that your mom is your lesbian lover, or recalling her girlhood crush on Jesus (who looked like Kris Kristofferson and sang like Kenny Loggins), Samantha leaves no stone unturned. She shares her unique point of view on a variety of subjects as wide-ranging as her deep affinity for old people and her hatred of hot ham.  It's all here, in irresistible prose that will leave you in stitches and eager for more.

(from Book Sparks)

Everybody knows everybody in The Hollows, a quaint, charming town outside of New York City. It's a place where neighbors keep an eye on one another's kids, where people say hello in the grocery store, and where high school cliques and antics are never quite forgotten.  As a child, Maggie found living under the microscope of small-town life stifling. But as a wife and mother, she has happily returned to The Hollow's insular embrace.  As a psychologist, her knowledge of family histories provides powerful insights into her patients' lives. So when the girlfriend of her teenage son, Rick, disappears, Maggie's intuitive gift proves useful to the case -- and also dangerous.

Eerie parallels soon emerge between Charlene's disappearance and the abduction of another local girl that shook the community years ago when Maggie was a teenager. The investigation has her husband, Jones, the lead detective on the case, acting strangely.  Rick, already a brooding teenager, becomes even more withdrawn. In a town where the past is always present, nobody is above suspicion, not even a son in the eyes of his father.

"I know how a moment can spiral out of control," Jones says to a shocked Maggie as he searches Rick's room for incriminating evidence. "How the consequences of one careless action can cost you everything."

As she tries to reassure him that Rick embodies his father in all of the important ways, Maggie realizes this might be exactly what Jones fears most.  Determined to uncover the truth, Maggie pursues her own leads into Charlene's disappearance and exposes a long-buried town secret -- one that could destroy everything she holds dear.  This thrilling novel about one community's intricate yet fragile bonds will leave readers asking How well do I know the people I love? and How far would I go to protect them?

Tempted by a Warrior by Amanda Scott - Giveaway!

by Amanda Scott

Lady Fiona, wed in haste, has never known marital peace. When last she'd seen her cruel husband Will, he'd struck her - and she has no memory of what she did next - only that she woke later alone in her bedchamber. Will has gone missing, and Fiona fears that in her rage and terror she might somehow have killed him. When her husband's cousin Sir Richard comes to search for Will, Fiona is touched by his warm nature. A knight and warrior, Richard is drawn to Fiona's brave manner, quickly seeing in her an equal measure of inner courage. Confessing that she fears having killed Will, Fiona accepts Richard's offer to help her. Pursuing together the mystery of Will's disappearance, they fall in love. Meanwhile the English are reinforcing their garrison in the Scottish Borderlands, putting Fiona, Richard, and Scotland in peril....

FIVE FUN FACTS:
1. The title Tempted by a Warrior, as with that of its predecessor, Seduced by a Rogue, can be read two ways, because the warrior can be either the lady Fiona or the hero, Sir Richard Seyton, Baron Kirkhill. The reader can decide which one it is.

2. I wrote most of this book last summer and fall while sitting on the porch of a rustic lakeside cabin in the High Sierras (meaning no internet, no road, no phone or electricity, but loads of peace and relative quiet), aided by nosy (and noisy) Stellar jays, assorted chipmunks and squirrels, and the odd glass of wine offered by childhood friends and neighbors who thought I ought to relax and enjoy real life more.

3. My hard drive crashed while I was at the lake, and my tech-brilliant nephew, whose cabin is across the lake, suggested putting my laptop in the freezer for a few hours and then trying to access the hard drive to save the book (and other sundry files) onto a flash drive that he would provide. See wine reference in #2 above. Fortunately, freezing the computer worked and a nearby (relatively) computer fixit place froze it again and managed thereby to clone my entire hard drive onto a much larger replacement hard drive. Amazing!

4. The information for the head injuries in this book comes from both research and personal experience.

5. Willie Magee, the uh…assistant who has insisted on helping me write for the past year, instead of climbing up my leg to get to the keyboard as he did when he was small, now leaps from the floor to my shoulder, drapes himself over said shoulder, and purrs loudly while watching my every keystroke. If I stop typing, he promptly reaches out a paw to the keyboard, clearly offering to continue in my stead. He also likes to play with the keyboard whenever I take a break, which has resulted in some interesting narrative, to say the least.

The Knight Life: "Chivalry Ain't Dead" by Keith Knight - Giveaway

by Keith Knight

With his edgy, fresh, and yes, strange worldview, Keith Knight has brought the "funny" back to the funny pages. Irreverent, topical, and always un-PC, his syndicated, award-winning comic strip The K-Chronicles has delighted, shocked, and just plain freaked out readers across the country. In THE KNIGHT LIFE, his collection of comic strips loosely based on his life, he skewers just about every political figure and social issue we can think of (and even some we can't). From "Bush's Shadow(y)Government" and "Biff argues the positives of racism" ("If we didn't treat you folks so badly, you would've never invented the blues !!") to "If Signs Told the Truth" (Denny's: "Serving blacks since 1997"), Knight's musings on life keep readers laughing and thinking. Combining the razor-sharp edge of Aaron McGruder's The Boondocks with the irony of the Farside, this is comic satire at its finest-and most warped.

Find Keith at his blog - KChronicles or on Facebook and twitter.

Touching the Sky by Bonnie Leon (book review)

Title: Touching the Clouds: A Novel (Alaskan Skies)
Author: Bonnie Leon
Publisher: Revell

My synopsis/thoughts:  Even though it was 1935 and women were expected to become wives and mothers, Kate Evans wanted more.  She had grown up in an airplane, learning to fly alongside her father.  At 19, when her best friend is killed in a plane crash where Kate was the pilot, she feels she is to blame.  So she decides she needs to push herself to show what a good pilot she really is.  After calling off her engagement, she moves to Alaska to try to find work as a bush pilot.

In Anchorage, her services aren't immediately needed, so she starts working for a kind couple and bunks in a room at the back of the store.  Eventually she gets work part time on a mail route.  It gives her some experience with Alaska weather and helps her to learn the lay of the land.  Along with the job, she meets Mike, another pilot who trains her on the mail route - and slowly takes a shine to her - and Paul, a man who moved to Alaska to get away from his past and the memories that haunt him.

I enjoy books set in this time period - though they only briefly touched on the Depression, I like the simplicity of people's lives and relationships that they come to rely on.  When the main character is a strong (and stubborn) female - all the better.  I found it interesting that the author got some of her information from an actual female Alaskan bush pilot from the 60's.  Living in the midwest, it is hard to grasp how isolated you could feel and how the weather can really be such a large component in how you plan your life.  This to me was a very laid back but warm book dealing with issues of guilt, forgiving oneself, and using the gifts God has given you in a way that is both fulfilling to you and honoring to Him.

Perfectly Dateless by Kristin Billerbeck (Book Review)

Title: Perfectly Dateless
Author: Kristin Billerbeck
Publisher: Revell

My synopsis/thoughts: Daisy Crispin was the perfect daughter - always did what her parents wanted - got good grades - didn't lie - wore the clothes her mom made for her - strong faith in God with good Christian values - But she felt like her highschool years were hum drum.  Having a date for prom would change all that.  She would get the perfect prom photo and then be able to go on to college with a picture to prove that she had been somebody.  Problem was - no one in her high school really knew who she was.

She started a Prom Journal that listed her top 5 choices of dates and what she was going to do to get one of them to go to prom with her.  Even though Chase Doogle was listed as #5, he was pretty much the one she was aiming for.  They had known each other since Kindergarten and she finally admitted that she had had a crush on him all that time.

Max Diaz entered the picture at this time.  He introduced himself to Daisy after her parents put a skit on at her school and really embarrased her. He was from Argentina and Daisy had to admit he was pretty cute.  But - she was still focused on Chase.

Her best friend Claire had been living with a secret.  Her parents weren't on vacation in Hawaii - they were separated - with her mom in Hawaii and her dad teaching on the East Coast.  The housekeeper was supposed to be keeping an eye on her, but she had quit - so Claire was on her own.  She talked Daisy into having the party of the year - one that everyone would remember them for.  Of course, since they went to a Christian high school there would be no alcohol or drugs - right?

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was fun for me to think back to high school as Daisy reminded me a lot of myself (except for the homemade clothes).  Having gone to a small midwestern high school though, we didn't really have the cliques that they seemed to have even in this Christian school, though. I liked that it portrayed a Christian girl with the same longings as any other kid.  It is hard not to fit in even if your faith is strong.  I can't wait to share this book with my teenage daughters.

Touching the Clouds by Bonnie Leon - Blog Tour July 11-17

by Bonnie Leon
Blog Tour July 11-17

Author Bonnie Leon takes readers to new heights in her latest book, Touching the Clouds, the first book in the new Alaskan Skies series.

Leon introduces readers to Kate Evans, an adventurous and independent young woman with a pioneering spirit. When she leaves her home in Washington State to follow her dream of being an Alaskan bush pilot, she knows it will be an uphill battle. But she never expected it to be quite like this. As the lone woman in a man's world, she finds that contending with people's expectations is almost as treacherous as navigating the wild arctic storms.

When she crosses paths with a mysterious man living alone in the forbidding wilderness, she faces a new challenge. Can Kate break through the walls he has put up around his heart? And will fear keep her from realizing her dreams?

Book 1 in the Alaskan Skies series, Touching the Clouds will draw readers in with raw emotion and suspense, all against the stunning backdrop of the Alaskan wilds during the 1930s.

Bonnie Leon is the bestselling author of more than ten historical fiction novels. She stays busy teaching women's Bible studies and speaking at writing seminars and conventions. She and her husband, Greg, live in Oregon.

Perfectly Dateless by Kristin Billerbeck (blog tour 7/11 - 7/18)

by Kristin Billerbeck
Blog tour July 11-18

The prom countdown has begun.

Daisy Crispin has 196 days to find the right date for the prom. There's only one problem--her parents won't let her date or even talk to a guy on the phone. Oh, and she's totally invisible at school, wears lame homemade clothes, and possesses no social skills. Okay, so maybe there's more than one problem.

Can she talk her parents into letting her go to the prom? Or will they succeed at their obvious attempts to completely ruin her life?

Perfectly Dateless is hilarious, shocking, and totally real. You'll fall in love with Daisy's sharp wit and resourcefulness as she navigates the world of boys, fashion, family, and friendship.

Kristin Billerbeck is the bestselling, award-winning author of several novels, including What a Girl Wants. A Christy Award finalist and two-time winner of the American Christian Fiction Writers Book of the Year, Billerbeck has appeared on The Today Show and has been featured in the New York Times. She lives with her family in northern California.

You can find her at her new blog called Girly Girl.

by Amanda Scott
(Blog Tour July 5 - 16)

Before her marriage, it was whispered that Lady Fiona Jardine was a young woman no man could control. Now the rumors are more threatening. Her cruel and womanizing husband has vanished into the battle-scarred Scottish borderlands without a trace, and everyone thinks Fiona is to blame.

Sir Richard Seyton, Laird of Kirkhill and a powerful knight and baron, is honor-bound to be Fiona's guardian until her husband is found. Kirkhill strives to keep her safe -- while her enemies plot to prevent her from ever being the mistress of the Jardine lands. But can he protect her from the desire that ignites at their slightest touch? For with suspicions mounting and tensions along the Borders rising, surrendering to their passion could cost Fiona and Kirkhill their very lives. . .
