The Letters by Suzanne Woods Fisher (Book Review and giveaway)

Title: The Letters
Author: Suzanne Woods Fisher
Publisher: Revell

About the book: Welcome to a place of unconditional love and unexpected blessings.

When widow Rose Schrock turns her Amish farmhouse into a bed and breakfast, she expects there might be problems.  The reaction of her cantankerous mother-in-law for one.  Disapproval from the church for another.  But what she doesn't expect is that the guests at the Inn at Eagle Hill will spill their problems into her life and into her heart.  She also never expects the kind of help and support she gets from Galen King, the quiet and rugged horse trainer next door.  Love, Rose discovers, can bloom in the most unexpected ways.

With inspiration from a true story and her signature plot twists, bestselling author Suzanne Woods Fisher invites you back to Stoney Ridge for a fresh story of simple pleasures and strong faith in a complex world.

Purchase Links:

My thoughts: I like Suzanne's books (reviews) because they have a strong faith based storyline, but they do not "shove" religion in your face.  This one contains all the elements I like in a book - strong family ties, romance, a little mystery, and believable characters.

Rose might be Amish, but her children are just like anyone else's.  Bethany is trying to discover who she is and is falling in love.  Mim is becoming a teenager with feelings of her own.  Luke and Sammy are as rambunctious as two little boys should be.  Tobe, the oldest, has runaway and we don't learn much about him.  I am hoping there is a book coming that will introduce us to him, as I am sure he has much to share.

Rose is a very strong woman and mother, with her strength coming from God.  She still struggles with the problems that life throws at her though, and can be too stubborn to see things that are right in front of her.  Her first guest, Delia, brings her own set of problems to Eagle Hill, but at the same time, she brings some answers to Rose's prayers.  It is refreshing to read a book where you see God orchestrating chance meetings.

About the author:  Suzanne Woods Fisher is the bestselling author of the Lancaster County Secrets series and the Stoney Ridge Seasons series, as well as nonfiction books about the Amish, including Amish Peace.  She is also the coauthor of an Amish children's series, The Adventures of Lily Lapp.  Suzanne is a Christy Award finalist and a Carol Award finalist.  She is the host of internet radio show Amish Wisdom and a  columnist for Christian Post and Cooking & Such magazines.  She lives in California.

Release Blitz: Sweet Proposal by Celia J. Anderson

Sweet Proposal
by Celia J. Anderson

Books, chocolate and a Jacuzzi: could there be a better combination? Gorgeous Geordie Leo arrives in Clayton-on-the-Bream with a mission to make his mark. When he reveals his ideas for a bespoke bookshop and chocolate-themed cafe, struggling writer Mab can’t resist his plea for help.

However, Leo’s timing is disastrous. Engaged to flighty, super-thin Sophie and knowing that Mab is up to her neck in a mysterious scheme of her own, Leo fights hard to ignore the warm, sensual friendship that is growing between them. When their eclectic mix of family and friends weigh in to help, the dream seems almost possible, but can Leo ignore Mab’s shady past? As they battle with sabotage, jealousy, vindictive neighbours and unpredictable relationships, Mab and Leo find that even chocolate can’t always make miracles happen . . .

Available from:

Excerpt:

Leo swerved to avoid a dead badger.  The A1 was still so quiet that groups of starlings rose in disgruntled crowds as he disturbed their breakfast, and the cafe where he had once eaten the best bacon sandwich of his life was firmly shuttered.

He gave in to the violent rumblings of his stomach and reached into the glove box, tearing the emergency chocolate bar open with his teeth and chewing until the bitter sweetness melted on his tongue, soothing and sensual. Chocolate and the future – they were closely linked in Leo’s mind. He sighed deeply. It was a pity that Sophie didn’t share his enthusiasm, but he supposed it was hard to get enthusiastic about a chocolate-based dream when all you ate was lettuce. Sophie was only twenty-five after all, ten years younger than Leo, stunningly beautiful and harder to amuse than a teenager on a family holiday. Maybe after they were married she would realise what a brilliant opportunity this move was going to be, and would be ready to leave Newcastle and her weird friends behind.

Stretching his legs, Leo decided that this cab must have been designed for a much smaller man. He yawned, felt his eyelids droop and blinked furiously, thinking of hot baths and strong coffee. He’d had no sleep for almost twenty-four hours. Celebrating was fine, but work would have to come first from now on. It was time for the Chocolate Project. The excitement that had been building up in waves washed over Leo again, and he gave the middle-aged lady driving towards him the full benefit of his flashing grin and dimples. He saw her jaw drop and laughed for the sheer joy of living – at last, Leo was about to make his mark, and no one was going to stop him.

About the author: When she’s not marking children’s work, or writing stories involving pants, Celia spends far too much time on Facebook (Celia Joy Anderson) and does a lot of walking to counteract the cooking, eating and drinking which form another of her hobbies. She blogs as part of the Romaniacs online writers’ group - http://theromaniacgroup.wordpress.com and tweets as @CeliaAnderson1. Her own website was recently launched thanks to Lucy Felthouse – http://celiajanderson.co.uk and she has an author page on Facebook (Celia J Anderson).

Her ultimate dream is to have her children’s books published too. Usually sea-starved in the depths of the Midlands, she can often be found wandering happily around Brighton visiting her two daughters and pretending to collect ideas for her next book.

Book Promo: Tigereye by Mara Harrison

Tigereye
by Mara Harrison

Scarlett is being hunted — by the agency, the man in the blue car, the angry girl inside her own head. She doesn't know what they want from her…or why she keeps waking up in somebody else's life, masquerading as a spy. Code name: Tigereye

Scarlett Fitzgerald's normal teenage life is wrenched apart when she wrecks her car only weeks before graduation. Everyone assures her she's fine, but they're wrong. They have to be, because ever since the accident strange things have started to happen. It only takes a few days for Scarlett to realize she's being followed. The man in the blue car is getting closer and he won't leave her alone. But she'll take the creepy man in the car any day over the scary feeling that someone else is trying to control her body, or the memories of a surgery that everyone insists she never had. And then there are the dreams — vivid, scary, so real that she wakes up in the morning bruised and sore like she's been awake the entire time, fighting, falling, running for her life. Scarlett is plunged into a mystery that keeps growing every time she turns over a new rock. And when she finally gets to the truth, she realizes that nothing in her life is how she thought it was. Especially herself.

Hi! Mara Harrison here talking about my new book Tigereye. The whole thing stemmed from a conversation I had with my mom one day about a girl who lived one life when she was awake and another when she was dreaming. I wanted to put some fun unique twists in it and (hopefully) keep people guessing until the end.

The scene below is the first in the book. I wanted to let the reader experience Scarlett's confusion and fear while she's in the middle of it. There's no lead up, no explanation, we're dropped right into the scene. She has no idea what's going on and I don't want the readers to either.

Chapter One
Awake…Maybe

Consciousness came in short excruciating bursts. White lights, penetrating noises, voices filtering in through fuzzy layers of gray matter. And then there was darkness, quiet. Nothing hurt in the dark. Scarlett fought it, strived toward the pain once again. Pain was life. And the other…no. She wasn't ready for that yet.
Not yet.
But it hurts…
Not yet.
"Relax…" The voice was deep, soothing, treacherous.
No. I'm not ready to die. Scarlett struggled to move.
"Scarlett. You're safe. Sleep."
Her eyes were closed already. She didn't trust the voice, but she listened. It was so much easier to let quiet take over.
"Good girl,” he said. “You'll be fine soon."
She nodded weakly. At least in her mind she did. The darkness seeped in, soft and heavy but sleep remained elusive. Vaguely, Scarlett became aware of voices muttering, feet shuffling.
"She's down again. We can complete the procedure."
Procedure?

Panicked, Scarlett tried to tear herself out of the heavy, drugged sleep, but something sharp sliced into her head at the base of her skull. She would have screamed if she could. It hurt too badly for her to even be scared. For a long time, Scarlett knew nothing else but excruciating white hot pain. When she thought she wouldn't be able to handle anymore, when it seemed like she must be dying because nothing else could hurt so horribly bad, the pain ebbed, slowly drained away until finally she could breathe again.
"It's completely connected now. Move quickly. Retrieve the package and get it to safety. We don't know yet how long the chip will be active."
Chip? Panic flooded through her groggy body.
"And be careful," a second voice added. "Until we figure out who was behind the crash, we don't leave anything to chance."
Another shot of pain stabbed her in the arm, and then it was gone and the darkness pulled at her once again. Scarlett opened her eyes. She had to fight it.
She was in a room, the lights overhead were nearly blinding. A blond man leaned over her, hand on her arm, face partially obscured by the lights behind his head. Another man with dark hair hovered at the corner of her bed. Scarlett could barely see him with the lights shining bright in her eyes. Only a vague shape looming, impressions of colors. Scarlett tried to pull away from the blond man. She had to find out where she was. She had to escape.
"What are you doing to me?" she forced out. Her voice felt sore and scratchy, sounded even worse. She had to sit up, even if the room was spinning. Scarlett squeezed her eyes closed for another moment and gathered the strength to move.
I have to get up. They're going to kill me…
She couldn't let that happen.
The blond guy reached up and brushed her forehead, his touch oddly gentle. "York, she's still awake. We need another tranquilizer."
The dark haired one, York, loomed over her with a needle, long and menacing, clutched in his hand.
"N—" Scarlett tried to speak. But he stuck the second needle in her arm, and with a quick bite of pain, she was out.

Reviews:

Overall, this book was nice, I great distraction and entertainment, the scenes were well build and it was the first time I read about were-tigers and I was enjoying the difference from the usual werewolves story. ~ Proserpine Craved For

This is the first book that I have read from Marissa Dobson and it definitely won’t be my last. I loved the tiger shapeshifter aspect of this book which I haven’t read much about in previous books. ~ Jennifer at Books-n-Kisses

When I first read a review for Tiger Time, I knew this was a must read. Now I know that it is definitely a must read for anyone that like were romances. Excerpt:
Tabitha screamed and jumped up quickly when she felt the solid body against hers. “Who the hell are you?”

“Don’t scream, Tabitha. You didn’t meet me tonight. I wanted to make sure you were all right. When I arrived, there was blood in the hall, your door was open, and I came in. There was more blood in your apartment. I called the hospitals, and they had no listings under your name, so I stayed here to see if you would return.”

While he spoke, she noticed his body. He must have been two hundred and twenty pounds, all of it muscle. He had arms the size of her waist. He reminded her of one of the biker guys who came into the restaurant. His chin-length black hair and broad shoulders gave him a menacing look. The only thing that hinted he might have a softer side was his spectacular, ocean blue eyes. His hair, brushing against the collar of his shirt, made her want to run her hands through it to see if it was as soft as it looked. But not right now.

“Back up. How do you know my name?”

“Didn’t you get the note I left on your door yesterday? My name is Ty Reynolds. I was a friend of your father’s.” He sat there on the couch watching her, careful not to move as if worried he’d scare her.

Shock must have shown on her face, because before she could say anything, he added, “I’m not here to hurt you. If I wanted to hurt you, I would have done so already. I made a promise to your father that when you were old enough, I would tell you everything, and I would do everything I could to protect you.”

My caseworker must have had the information wrong. If this man was a friend of dad’s, then he had to be a murder or into some deep shit. At this moment in time, however, she didn’t care. “I don’t care who you are. I want you out of my apartment!” She walked over to her door and opened it. “Please leave.”

“Listen, Tabitha, I know you’re scared, but you need to listen to me. Please just give me ten minutes.”

“You broke into my apartment and now you want me to listen to you? I don’t want anything to do with you.”

Book Blast: The Portal's Choice by KD Pryor (Giveaway)

The Portal's Choice
(The Gatekeepers of Em'pyrean, Book 1)
by KD Pryor

Journal, just in case . . .

I didn’t ask to meet ghosts. Shoot, I was fine without them in my life. Uncle Craig and Hannah were nasty to me, but at least I knew how to handle living pains in the butt. Now I have to figure out how to open and close a portal between the human and spirit worlds. And I have to find and return a bunch of angry ghosts through the gateway and lock them on their side. I don’t know why the portal chose me to do this, a fifteen-year-old kid with no ghost busting experience. But it did. And if I want a ghost-free night’s sleep anytime soon, I’d better figure out how to get the job done. Because I’ve about had it with murderous ghouls and their unpleasant agendas.  “Signed Tallis Challinor”

After the death of her parents, Tallis Challinor and her brother Wyatt must move to the Midwest to live with their dead mother’s sister and her family. When Aunt Sandra dies three-and-a-half years later, Tallis and Wyatt find themselves moving yet again, this time to New Hampshire to live with their father’s sister, Aunt Gabbie, and her husband Noreis. Gabbie is young, pretty and fun. Tallis remembers being a little girl and playing with her Aunt at the family home in California, before her parents died. So Tallis is excited to re-locate and reconnect with Gabbie. But what should have been a happy reunion is plagued with problems when Noreis opens a portal between the spirit and human worlds located in the basement of the house.

Tallis is a practical kid. She doesn’t believe that ghosts exist. But she can’t deny what she sees with her own eyes and the two ghosts Tallis meets at Thanksgiving in the basement of her aunt’s house are definitely not figments of her imagination, although she wishes they were. Tallis is unwittingly drawn into the portal’s energy when one of the ghosts fixates on her and forces her to assist in the release of three particularly nasty spirits. As a final blow, the portal chooses Tallis as a temporary gatekeeper and she finds herself charged with the duty of returning the very ghouls she’s set free, plus a few of their buddies, back to the spirit realm.

As Tallis learns the secrets of the portal and begins to understand her newly acquired power, she formulates a plan to return the ghosts. Along the way, she receives help from many new friends who fill in the details about the identity of the escaped spirits, providing a possible motive for the outrageous actions of the escaped ghosts. Tallis must learn to trust herself and others as she taps into her inner courage to get the job done and save her town from the angry restless dead set.

April 29th, 2:30 in the morning
One week to go.
I feel it, the nearness of the spirits. The fact that everything is aligning to some sort of conclusion. I hope I’m ready. I hope I have the power to finish this thing. And, I hope that Gregory Millard calls soon.

The shrill ring of the phone pierced the late night silence of the house, startling me out of an exhausted sleep. My body jerkedto semi-awareness and I reached for it, knocking it to the floor in my confusion. I reached down, patted the floor, and finally found the phone as it rang for the third time.

“Yeah?” I mumbled.

“Hello, can you hear me?” shouted a voice I didn’t recognize.

I was groggy with sleep and confused as to my exact location. The voice continued hollering at me, but I had trouble focusing on it as my sluggish brain worked to figure out why I wasn’t in my bed. Finally, I remembered that I’d fallen asleep on the sofa in the front room. Satisfied that I could place my body in space, I directed my mind to the person who was calling. A glance at the clock on the wall said it was 2:00. In the morning.

“Who is this?” I asked, stretching my neck until I felt a loud, satisfying crack.

“My name is …” a male voice started, then abruptly stopped. The connection appeared to be lost.

“Hey, are you there?” I hollered back into the phone, assuming that if the caller had to yell to be heard, he needed me to yell back at him.

“Tallis, what’s going on down there?” my aunt, Gabbie, called to me. She hurried down the creaky, wooden staircase.

“Phone call,” I mumbled when she appeared in the doorway.“But I think the connection’s broken. It wasn’t too good to start with.”

Gabbie moved to my side and looked down at me. The flickering fire in the wood stove illuminated the paleness of her skin and amplified the heavy shadows under her eyes. She looked awful, much older than her twenty-seven years.

“Do you think?” she began, and then swallowed. “Is it him?”

I shook my head. “I don’t know.”

The voice burst through the static. “Gregory Millard.” He was gone again.

16-year-old Zippy Green never meant to fall in love with a girl, but when she does, her ultra-conservative father tries to send her to anti-gay camp. At the Kansas City airport, however, she hides inside a giant suitcase and sneaks onto an airplane headed not to the camp, but to Seattle, where her online love Mira lives. Halfway through the flight, the plane barrels out of control and crashes into the ground, knocking her unconscious.

When Zippy awakens, she finds that most of the passengers have vanished. She doesn’t know what’s happened, but she’s determined to find out. She begins a quest on foot toward Seattle, and along the way, she meets a teenager with a concussion , a homeless man with a heart condition, a child without a shred of bravery, and a terrier named Judy. Together the group discovers that more than two-thirds of the world's population has mysteriously disappeared. But that's only the beginning...

All Zippy wants is to find her Mira, but before she can she has to contend with two outside forces. The first is her homophobic father, who does everything in his power to keep her from the girl she loves. And the second is extinct creatures of all shapes and sizes, including living, breathing dinosaurs, which have replaced the missing population.

“Over the Rainbow” Short Excerpt

The
end was coming, faster and faster, as the plane plummeted. I peered into the
carrier to see a little white terrier staring back at me.

When I closed my eyes for the final time I felt two
ice-cold tears roll down my cheeks.

            “Mira… I love you… I love you… I—”

The plane collided against the Earth, and I launched
forward, struck my head against the cargo door, and blacked out.
