The Letters by Suzanne Woods Fisher (Book Review and giveaway)

Title: The Letters
Author: Suzanne Woods Fisher
Publisher: Revell

About the book: Welcome to a place of unconditional love and unexpected blessings.

When widow Rose Schrock turns her Amish farmhouse into a bed and breakfast, she expects there might be problems.  The reaction of her cantankerous mother-in-law for one.  Disapproval from the church for another.  But what she doesn't expect is that the guests at the Inn at Eagle Hill will spill their problems into her life and into her heart.  She also never expects the kind of help and support she gets from Galen King, the quiet and rugged horse trainer next door.  Love, Rose discovers, can bloom in the most unexpected ways.

With inspiration from a true story and her signature plot twists, bestselling author Suzanne Woods Fisher invites you back to Stoney Ridge for a fresh story of simple pleasures and strong faith in a complex world.

My thoughts: I like Suzanne's books (reviews) because they have a strong faith based storyline, but they do not "shove" religion in your face.  This one contains all the elements I like in a book - strong family ties, romance, a little mystery, and believable characters.

Rose might be Amish, but her children are just like anyone else's.  Bethany is trying to discover who she is and is falling in love.  Mim is becoming a teenager with feelings of her own.  Luke and Sammy are as rambunctious as two little boys should be.  Tobe, the oldest, has runaway and we don't learn much about him.  I am hoping there is a book coming that will introduce us to him, as I am sure he has much to share.

Rose is a very strong woman and mother, with her strength coming from God.  She still struggles with the problems that life throws at her though, and can be too stubborn to see things that are right in front of her.  Her first guest, Delia, brings her own set of problems to Eagle Hill, but at the same time, she brings some answers to Rose's prayers.  It is refreshing to read a book where you see God orchestrating chance meetings.

About the author:  Suzanne Woods Fisher is the bestselling author of the Lancaster County Secrets series and the Stoney Ridge Seasons series, as well as nonfiction books about the Amish, including Amish Peace.  She is also the coauthor of an Amish children's series, The Adventures of Lily Lapp.  Suzanne is a Christy Award finalist and a Carol Award finalist.  She is the host of internet radio show Amish Wisdom and a  columnist for Christian Post and Cooking & Such magazines.  She lives in California.

Book Review: A New Home for Lily by Mary Ann Kinsinger and Suzanne Woods Fisher

Title: A New Home for Lily (Book two of The Adventures of Lily Lapp)
Author: Mary Ann Kinsinger and Suzanne Woods Fisher
Publisher:  Revell

About the book: The second novel in the charming Adventures of Lily Lapp series, A New Home for Lily gives children ages 8-12 a fascinating glimpse into the life of the Amish with lots of fun and laughter along the way. It combines the real-life stories of growing up Amish from Mary Ann Kinsinger and the bestselling writing of Amish fiction and nonfiction author Suzanne Woods Fisher. With line illustrations throughout, this series is sure to capture the hearts of readers young and old.

Lily Lapp is moving with her family to Pennsylvania to join a new Amish community. In this small town where changes – and newcomers – are greeted with suspicion, Lily must adjust to a new school, new friends and Aaron Yoder, an annoying boy who teases her relentlessly. Still, there are exciting new developments, including an attic full of adventure and a new baby brother. But why, Lily wonders, can't God bring her just one sister?

“Available February 2013 at your favorite bookseller from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group.”

My thoughts:  This book picks up where the first one left off, but it does very well as a stand alone.  Lily and her family are getting settled into their new house in Pennsylvania.  She is sad because of all those things that she feels was left behind in New York - Like her cousin Hannah and having her own bedroom.  In the new house, her bed and dresser are in the hallway at the top of the stairs.  She is excited to be going back to a real schoolhouse though.  She just hopes that her new teacher is nice.

Lily grows up a little in this book - it covers her 2 - 4 grades.  In this time she experiences the birth of another baby in the family and also death.  She discovers that no matter where you live there are mean people, and that different doesn't always mean bad.  The chapters in the book are like individual little stories that give you glimpses into the life of an Amish child.  It sort of reminded me of the Little House on the Prairie books - Amish style.  I can't imagine any little girl who wouldn't enjoy meeting Lily and learning about her life.

Life with Lily by Mary Ann Kinsinger and Suzanne Woods Fisher (Book Review)

Title: Life with Lily (Book One - The Adventures of Lily Lapp)
Author: Mary Ann Kinsinger and Suzanne Woods Fisher
Publisher: Revell

Available October 2012  at your favorite bookseller from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group.

About the book: On a small Amish farm in upstate New York, a young Lily Lapp has plenty to do and plenty of people to love.  but changes are coming -- including a new baby brother,  a new teacher at school, and new ways of looking at the world.  Lily's growing up Amish, and there's always a lot to learn -- if only Lily can stay out of trouble!

My thoughts:  I really enjoy the adult Amish books that I have read and this children's chapter book was no different.  It is hard to imagine a world where children can still grow up so innocent and simple -- and so joyful.

Lily's favorite thing to do is play with her rag doll Sally - and if she can do it with her cousin Hannah, it is even better.  You find the family often doing chores together, gathering eggs, planting a garden, or Lily helping out with her two younger brothers for her mom.

But not everything is wonderful for Lily.   Her aunt is battling cancer, her teacher's buggy  was hit by a car and she had to stop teaching due to her injuries, and the new teacher is very strict.  And on a regular basis she has to put up with Mandy Mast.  One of the few girls her age, and being raised without a mother, Lily's mom has asked her to be understanding with Mandy - but somehow Mandy always seems to get Lily into trouble!

I really liked Lily and look forward to reading more about her adventures in the following books in this series. Book Two - A New Home for Lily is due out in February of 2013.  Find out more at www.AdventuresofLilyLapp.comIf you like the Little House on the Prairie books, then I think you will like the Adventures of Lily Lapp books.

Amish Proverbs - Book Tour and Giveaway

Title: Amish Proverbs: Words of Wisdom From the Simple Life
Author: Suzanne Woods Fisher
Publisher: Revell

From the back cover: Through firsthand research and personal relationships, Suzanne Woods Fisher has collected more than 200 proverbs that uncover the rich heritage, folklore, faith, values, history and essence of the Plain People.  These proverbs serve as teaching tools and maxims for practical living -- but they're not just for the Amish.  They're for anyone who seeks God's wisdom and truth for everyday circumstances.

Ranging from the simple to the profound, from the serious to the humorous, these sayings will stick with you through life's joys and sorrows. With beautiful full-color photos throughout, Amish Proverbs is the perfect gift for any occassion.

My favorite proverbs from the book:
  • There's only one way to fail, that's to quit.
  • Swallowing words before you say them is so much better than having to eat them afterward.
  • You can't stumble when you are on your knees.
  • It may be difficult to wait on the Lord, but it is worse to wish you had.
  • Patience is a virtue that carries a lot of wait.
I see many needlepoint designs that could be fashioned around some of these sayings!

Here are a couple that I remember from when I was a child:
  • Children should be seen and not heard.
  • What comes around goes around.
I received a copy of this book from Baker Publishing for review as well as one to give away!

The Waiting by Suzanne Woods Fisher (Book Review)

Title: The Waiting (Lancaster County Secrets series)
Author: Suzanne Woods Fisher
Publisher: Revell

My synopsis: This book is set in Pennsylvania in the mid-1960's in an Amish community.  It centers around Jorie King.  Jorie lives with her grandparents as the rest of her family has relocated to Canada.  She helps her grandfather raise Percheron horses and has just accepted the school teacher position at the one-room school house for her Amish neighbors.

She has been waiting for Ben Zook, a boy she has loved since she was a teenager, to come back from Vietnam, finally join the church and ask her to marry him. He is serving in the military as a conscientious objector.  Her best friend Mary Ann, is married to Ben's older brother Caleb.  They have a little girl Maggie and also take care of the two youngest Zook brothers, Matthew and Ephraim.  The Zook's parents were killed instantly when the buggy they were in was hit by a car.  Caleb took over the farm and has been running it and taking care of his brothers ever since.

Mary Ann becomes ill and is diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.  She is given just a matter of weeks to live.  Before she dies, she tells Caleb that she wants him to marry Jorie, as she doesn't believe Ben will ever be the man Jorie needs him to be.  Soon after that, word comes that Ben has been killed in Vietnam and his body cremated.  Tragedy isn't over though as Mary Ann dies about a week after Ben's funeral.

As you can imagine, the whole family is left numb and in shock.  Caleb can't seem to get back to any routine and is letting his duties as father as well as farmer slide.  (Before Mary Ann became ill, he had been chosen as the new minister of the district as well). Well, you guessed it.  Caleb soon proposes to Jorie because he knows it is what Mary Ann wanted and knows she would be good for Maggie and Ephraim.  Jorie turns him down as she is looking for a proposal from the heart.

Jorie and Caleb continue to grow closer together and Jorie realizes she is falling in love with him.  Those closest to them realize that they are perfect for each other.  When Caleb works up the courage to ask Jorie to marry him (for the third time) she accepts.  Before they can announce their engagement, trouble surfaces that throws all their lives in turmoil.  Will Jorie end up with Caleb? or one who might need her even more?

My thoughts:  I really enjoyed reading this book and found myself picturing these characters in my mind as I was reading about them.  (This would make a great Hallmark movie.)  It was cool for me to actually be able to see the Amish in a different light.  They may live simplier lives, but have the same emotions and complications of the heart as the English.   There are still decisions to be made as to what one wants to do (or what God wants them to do) with their lives.  Shoot, I struggle with this myself even as a grown woman with 3 children!   I could relate to Jorie as a young woman finding herself falling in love and having complications and misunderstandings arise that seem to thwart her plans.

Julia and Valentina Poole are twenty-year-old sisters with an intense attachment to each other. One morning the mailman delivers a thick envelope to their house in the suburbs of Chicago. Their English aunt Elspeth Noblin has died of cancer and left them her London apartment. There are two conditions for this inheritance: that they live in the flat for a year before they sell it and that their parents not enter it. Julia and Valentina are twins. So were the girls' aunt Elspeth and their mother, Edie.

The girls move to Elspeth's flat, which borders the vast Highgate Cemetery, where Christina Rossetti, George Eliot, Stella Gibbons, and other luminaries are buried.  Julia and Valentina become involved with their living neighbors: Martin, a composer of crossword puzzles who suffers from crippling OCD, and Robert, Elspeth's elusive lover, a scholar of the cemetery. They also discover that much is still alive in Highgate, including -- perhaps -- their aunt.

Arriving in the mail one day is a taunting letter that ends with a simple declaration: "See how well I know your secrets -- just think of a number."  Eerily, those who comply find that the letter writer has predicted their random choice exactly. For Dave Gurney, just retired as the NYPD's top homicide investigator and forging a new life with his wife, Madeleine, in upstate New York, the letters are oddities that begin as a diverting puzzle but quickly ignite a massive serial-murder investigation. Brought in as an investigative "consultant," Gurney soon accomplishes deductive breakthroughs that have local police in awe. Yet, with each taunting move by his seemingly clairvoyant opponent, Gurney feels his tragedy-marred past rising up to haunt him, his marriage approaching a dangerous precipice, and, finally, a dark, cold fear building that he's met an adversary who can't be stopped.

Gwen Raine has it all: She's an attractive, thirtyish stay-at-home mom who lives with her successful husband and two small children in the kind of tranquil, upscale suburban community where everything seems to be right -- yet so much can go wrong.

And it does, starting with a seemingly minor decision that turns Gwen's perfect life upside down. One summer morning, after dropping off her daughter at swim class, Gwen purchases a small bag of marijuana from an old flame. (She's counting on the pot to help her unwind that night, when she and her husband, Brian, have some precious private time after the kids are asleep.) On the way home, Gwen has a car accident that leaves her bruised and somewhat battered but leaves the other driver (an elderly man who crossed into her lane) dead. The cops know it's not her fault, but when they find the marijuana in Gwen's car, they throw the book at her. There have been problems with drugs in the schools, and they're determined to crack down.

Meanwhile, Brian, a pharmaceutical company executive, is embroiled in an ethical dilemma of his own over the marketing of a drug for "off-label" use. And Gwen's former lover, Jude, a local restaurateur and the supplier of the stash of the title, has gotten in way over his head with his little side business.

Told from multiple perspectives and driven by psychological suspense and an ever-thickening plot, this ambitious and deeply satisfying novel examines the moral complications that arise when a modern woman's fierce determination to do the right thing collides head-on with human fallibility and desire.

Molly Madison is unaware of the sociopath who is on the loose, creating havoc with a sense of his or her own justice. Her life is shattered by the sudden death of her beloved parents, and the revelation of her husband Phillip's affair -- with another man -- Molly leaves the life of Country Clubs and the luxury of city life in Florida and heads west to Montana, resolved to run the family ranch, and to move on with her life. Her attraction to Clayton Leatherbe, the ranch foreman, is instant. But before a romance can blossom, the ranch falls prey to sabotage by wealthy land developers determined to drive Molly out, and Clayton learns a family secret and collides with the sociopath that could put the ranch -- and Molly's life -- in jeopardy.

A sharp mystery that swirls with family secrets, betrayal, love and loss, Once Wicked Always Dead is a strong debut from an author with literary blood in her veins.

by Paul Solotaroff
(Hachette - July with giveaway)

In January of 1976, Paul Solotaroff went off to college as a skin-and-bones loner in platform heels and a David Bowie mullet. When his father drove out to campus to bring him home at term's end, Paul was 190 pounds of shrink-wrapped muscle, having discovered the alchemies of the campus weight room and the new miracle of steroids. It was the summer that disco swept New York, and the city, nearly bankrupt and besieged by crime, forgot its troubles in a riot of sex and dancing that cranked till four in the morning.

Paul quickly discovered that his ripped physique made the velvet ropes swing open -- as if by magic -- at the hottest nightclubs New York had to offer. And his biceps threatened to tear the sleeves of his Nik Nik shirts as he met willing young women on dance floors populated by Gotham's elite. His life exploded in Day-Glo glamour: sleeping with beautiful tourists, becoming a main attraction of East Side orgies run by a kimono-clad millionaire, popping quaaludes and bennies in penthouse lofts. Caught in the throbbing beat of nonstop pleasure, Paul found a way to finance his addiction to drugs and Bottega boots: by stripping at bachelorette parties all over Long Island. It was up and up and up, bigger and bigger and bigger, until his body and his soul were stretched to the point of bursting.

Set at the dawn of the muscle culture -- when a flood tide of Schwarzenegger-inspired young men flocked to fitness clubs -- The Body Shop is a coming-of-age romp and a comedy of bad manners, good intentions, and really hideous clothes. Equal parts Boogie Nights and Saturday Night Fever, it sends up the era in a swath of wicked jokes. But woven into the stretchy fabric is a question of deadly seriousness: How does a kid who's been largely unfathered become an honorable man, and how far will he go to figure it out before he kills himself trying?

The tension escalates when Miss Cleta, Jessilyn's neighbor, becomes the first white townsperson to accept Tal's treatment, an offense that quickly leads to violence at the hands of the revived Ku Klux Klan.  As Jessilyn dreams of vengeance, she begins to realize that in order to bring true peace, she'll have to win the battle that's waging in her own heart first.

by Aura Imbarus

In an epic tale of identity and the indomitable human spirit, Out of the Transylvania Night explores tyranny, freedom, love, success, and the price paid for misaligned dreams.  An incredibly powerful memoir.

"I'd grown up in the land of TRANSYLVANIA, homeland to Dracula, Vlad the Impaler and, worse, the Communist dictator, Nicolae Ceausescu -- who turned Romania into a land of gray-clad zombies who never dared to show their individuality, and where neighbors became informants, and the Securitate made people disappear.  Daylight empowered the regime to encircle us like starved wolves, and so night had always been the time to steal a bit of freedom.  As if bred into our Transylvanian blood, we were like vampires who came to life after sundown.  I buried the family jewels, tucked the flag into my sweater and left my outpost to join the action. . . tonight Ceausescu would die!"

Known for using stand-ins to pose for him, Aura doubts if it was even Ceausescu himself who was killed that night.  Nevertheless, when her countrymen topple one of the most draconian regimes in the Soviet bloc, Aura Imbarus tells herself that life post-revolution will be different.  But little in the country changes. With two pieces of luggage and a powerful dream, Aura and her new husband flee to America.  Through sacrifice and hard work, the couple acquire a home, cars, and travel -- but trying to be Americans is much more complicated than they expect.  More difficulties set in: the stock market crash takes their savings, house, and cars; thieves steal three centuries' worth of heirloom jewels; and Aura's beloved mother dies.

Aura's marriage crumbles under the stress. Devastated, she asks herself, "How much of one's life is owed to others?"  Tested even further by the vagaries of fate, Aura discovers a startling truth about striking a balance between one's dreams and the sacrifices and compromises that allow for serenity, selfhood, and lasting love.  More resolution comes when in 2010, Ceausescus body is exhumed to answer questions of a cover-up, and Aura can finally lay to rest the haunting mysteries of her past.

Here's the story -- the real story -- about what it takes to make a blended family work.

Any parent who has been through a divorce knows that a blended family is far more messy and complicated than any television show portrays.  Leftover anger and a lack of trust can make moving ahead an overwhelming challenge.  Beyond the Brady Bunch is written by a couple that has survived the ups and downs of bringing children from previous marriages together to form a new family.

Ray and Debbie Alsdorf understand the frustration and sense of failure that can often accompany a parent's best efforts.  Together, they tell their story and offer perspective on the emotional land mines that can undo the parent-child relationship postdivorce.

Honest yet unfailingly hopeful, their message is clear:  God loves families -- no matter what they've been through -- and wants to take them to a loving future together.  Beyond the Brady Bunch can help you get there.

Dismissed with Prejudice is a legal drama that deals with the dark side of a powerful university, major college sports and state government.  At the urging of a wealthy businessman and booster with mafia ties, an assistant coach is fired under false pretenses.  Landon Duhon, a smalltown lawyer, reads about it in the paper and becomes suspicious.  It's the third assistant in the last seven years fired by the same multi-million-dollar head coach, a political schmoozer and philanderer.  Duhon sends his colleague to investigate and slowly uncovers layer upon layer of fraud, corruption and backroom deals.  The assistant's career is over regardless of the outcome, but he decides to sue for wrongful termination, setting in motion a legal battle that escalates into threats, violence and murder.  The novel is a classic "little guy against the system" story with insight into the bureaucracy, legal environment, and corrupting influence of money in the university and political arena.

In the tradition of The Gospel According to Starbucks, this groundbreaking book dares to ask:  Instead of bringing people to Jesus, how about joining Jesus in what he is already doing?

Author Leonard Sweet challenges you to use all five senses to interact with God and others.  Nudge will remind you that for God to do something through us, God must be doing something in us.

by Larry Levin

In 2002, Larry Levin and his twelve-year-old twin sons, Dan and Noah, brought their ailing cat into the neighborhood animal hospital to be put to sleep.  What began as one of their family's saddest days took a sharp turn for the better when the oddest-looking dog they'd ever seen bounded into the waiting room and into their arms.

Larry and the boys assumed that this white puppy had been in a fire -- he was missing an ear and half his face was covered in scar tissue -- but they were soon told a different story.  He had been near-fatally injured as part of a dog-fighting ring in the area, discovered by the police, and left at the after-hours service of the hospital.  When the hospital administrator found him in the morning, he was so bloodied and battered she knew he had a slim chance of survival.  But, determined to keep him alive, she convinced her veterinarian boss to perform a series of surgeries and readied him for adoption.

The Levins -- Larry, his wife Jennifer, and their sons -- accepted him as one of their own from the moment they met him.  As the rambunctious puppy matured into a loyal and protective member of the family (dubbed the "Third Twin"), he marked himself indelibly on their lives, healing long-held wounds and showing the twins, themselves adopted as infants, that unbreakable bonds can be formed in all kinds of families.

OOGY is about the power of redemption, and how animals and people can overcome the greatest of odds.  And Oogy is an incredibly special animal, whose sense of security and being loved has persevered despite his trials.  This one-in-a-million dog and his story will enter your heart and stay with you for a long time.
