ARC Arrival: The Hope of Refuge by Cindy Woodsmall

The Hope of Refuge by Cindy Woodsmall

Publisher: Waterbrook Press

I received this book for a blog tour in August - I have a second copy that will be given away at that time!

About the book: Can an Amish man help Cara find safety in a strange community with complex, unspoken ties to her family history?

Raised in foster care and now a widowed single parent, New Yorker Cara Moore struggles against poverty, fear, and a relentless stalker. When a trail of memories leads Cara and her daughter, Lori, away from the city toward an Amish community, she follows every lead, eager for answers to mysteries from her past and a fresh start. She quickly discovers that Dry Lake, Pennsylvania, is no place for an outsider. But one Amish man, Ephraim Mast, dares to fulfill the command he believes that he received from God - "Be me to her" - even though doing so threatens his way of life.

Fearful of the strange Englischer woman causing turmoil for her family, Ephraim's sister Deborah tries to focus on the marriage and home she longs to begin with Mahlon Stoltzfus. Her dreams are threatened when her fiance begins behaving oddly, withdrawing, causing concern for both Deborah and Mahlon's mother Ada. Will Ada's vision for transforming a run-down house unite them all in a common purpose - or push Mahlon away forever?

Torn between the requirements of his community and trying to do what he believes is right, Ephraim risks losing everything, including a developing friendship with the guarded single mother. And only he knows that long-held secrets about her family history ripple beneath the surface of Dry Lake - secrets with the power to tear apart the home Cara is desperately trying to create.

From the author of The New York Times bestseller When the Soul Mends, this powerful story of colliding worlds illuminates the assurance that only comes when truth is revealed. (from the back cover)

About the author: Cindy Woodsmall is the author of When the Heart Cries, When the Morning Comes, and When the Soul Mends. ARC Arrival: The Friends We Keep by Sarah Zacharias Davis

The Friends We Keep by Sarah Zacharias Davis

Publisher: Waterbrook Press

I received this book for a First Wild Card Tour coming in August.

About the book: Why are women's friendships so tricky?

During a particularly painful time in her life, Sarah Zacharias Davis learned how delightful - and wounding - women can be in friendship. She saw how some friendships end badly, others die slow deaths, and how a chance acquaintance can become that enduring friend you need.

The Friends We Keep is Sarah's thoughtful account of her own experiences and those of other women in navigating friendship. Her revealing discoveries tackle the questions every woman asks:

  • Why do we long for women friends?
  • Do we need friends like we need air or food or water?
  • What causes cattiness, competition, and co-dependency in too many friendships?
  • Why do some friendships last forever and others only a season?
  • How do we foster friendship?
  • When is it time to let a friend go, and how do we do so?
With heartfelt, intelligent writing, Sarah explores these questions and more with personal stories, cultural references and history, faith and grace. In the process, she delivers wisdom for navigating the challenges, mysteries, and delights of friendship: why we need friendships with other women, what it means to be safe in a relationship, and how to embrace what a friend has to offer, whether meager or generous. (from the book cover)

About the author: Sarah Zacharias Davis is the vice president of marketing and development for Ravi Zacharias International Ministries, having joined the ministry after working in strategic marketing for CNN. The daughter of best-selling writer Ravi Zacharias, Davis is the author of critically-acclaimed Confessions from an Honest Wife and Transparent. She lives in Atlanta, Georgia. (from the book cover)

"But then things changed. Mary Ellen started crying a lot. She tries to hide it from me the best she can, but every once in a while I'll catch her just staring at me, her eyes all swollen and wet with tears. Whenever this happens, all I can do is tell her that I'm sorry, even if I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be apologizing for." Jason sighed deeply; in that moment Cole could see that he was struggling to control his own emotions. "I don't think she'll be able to make it to the station tomorrow. I'm afraid it might kill her to watch me go." (p168, The Moon Looked Down by Dorothy Garlock)

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba

Publisher: William Morrow

I received this book from the publisher through Shelf Awareness.

About the book: "If you want to make it, all you have to do is try. . ."

He was mocked and called misala - crazy. But young William Kamkwamba struggled against the odds to fulfill a dream that would change his life in Malawi, a famine-stricken, landlocked nation on the southeastern tip of Africa. Using odds and ends found on his family's meager farm and in the local scrapyard - a broken shock absorber, a tractor fan, a bicycle frame and wheel, PVC pipe from a shower stall, tire rubber, stray copper wire, a clothesline - this fourteen-year-old boy, too poor to continue with school yet blessed with a rich imagination, embarked on a daring plan to build a windmill that would bring electricity - and hope - to his family's home.

With the help of his best friend and the support of his father, William forged a handmade contraption that created magetsi a mphepo - "electric wind" - that first powered four light bulbs and two radios in his family's compound and led to many other changes. With this one act of ingenuity and determination, William has become a worldwide sensation, offering hope, opportunity, and inspiration to millions everywhere. (from back cover)

Ravens by George Dawes Green (Blog tour and review)

Ravens by George Dawes Green

Publisher: Hachette Books

There is so much going on with this book right now I don't even know where to start. You might remember when I featured Ravens in a Waiting on Wednesday post way back in April. Or you might have caught the ARC Arrival post in June. Both of those posts gave a good description of the book, and so now, I am going to attempt to tell you how I felt about the book.

First sentence: Romeo was driving down from the Blue Ridge Mountains in the baffling twilight, going too fast, when a raccoon or possum ran in front of the car.

My thoughts: Honestly, this book was different than I thought it was going to be. It was much more character driven - I thought it would have more action. But I did like it. You really want to hate Shaw (and Romeo) when he takes the Boatwrights hostage - and with the way her manipulates Romeo to do all his dirty work. But he slowly begins to win the family over. While playing cards with Tara and her grandmother Nell, Tara begins to relax and actually flirt with Shaw. She tells herself that it is the only way that Nell will believe the whole lottery scam story that she is trying to sell. After winning over Nell and Tara, Shaw moves onto the rest of the family - and then to the public themselves. The community seems to fall in love with him at the press conference, seeking him out just to touch him and asking him to heal them. Shaw, of course, loves this attention and just basks in the glow.

Poor Romeo is just a puppet. He has been Shaw's friend since childhood - but it has not been a very healthy friendship. He worships Shaw in his own way and feels like he could do anything if it is what Shaw wants. He circles the town endlessly - just waiting for Shaw's signal that the Boatwrights are no longer cooperating and that he should kill whichever friend/family member he happens to be in close proximity to at the time. As he gets to know these people though, he doesn't know how he is going to be able to pull it off should he need to do it.

Ending is quite the twist and not one that I expected. Overall this is a good book and I would recommend it. Would have to give a warning though that it does contain foul language and has some sexual content.

ARC Arrival: The Weight of Silence by Heather Gudenkauf

The Weight of Silence by Heather Gudenkauf

Publisher: Mira Books

I received this book from the publisher through Shelf Awareness.

About the book: It happens quietly one August morning. As dawn's shimmering light drenches the humid Iowa air, two families awaken to find their little girls have gone missing in the night.

Seven-year-old Calli Clark is sweet, gentle, a dreamer who suffers from selective mutism brought on by a tragedy that pulled her deep into silence as a toddler. Calli's mother, Antonia, tried to be the best mother she could within the confines of marriage to a mostly absent, often angry husband. Now, though she denies that her husband could be involved in the possible abductions, she fears her decision to stay in her marriage has cost her more than her daughter's voice.

Petra Gregory is Calli's best friend, her soul mate and her voice. But neither Petra nor Calli has been heard from since their disappearance was discovered. Desperate to find his child, Martin Gregory is forced to confront a side of himself he did not know existed beneath his intellectual, professorial demeanor.

Now these families are tied by the question of what happened to their children. And the answer is trapped in the silence of unspoken family secrets. (from the back cover)

About the author: Heather Gudenkauf has spent the past sixteen years working with students of all ages and is currently an instructional coach, an educator who provides curricular and professional development support to teachers. As an individual with a hearing impairment, Heather chose to write The Weight of Silence to, among other things, highlight the struggles faced by children with communication disabilities. She lives in Dubuque, Iowa, with her husband, three children and a very spoiled German shorthaired pointer. The Weight of Silence is her first novel. (from the back cover)

ARC Arrival: The Brutal Telling by Louise Penny

The Brutal Telling by Louise Penny

Publisher: Minotaur Books

I received this book from the publisher through Shelf Awareness.

About the book: Chaos is coming to the lovely, seemingly tranquil town of Three Pines, just over the Canadian border. It begins to show its face one morning when a murdered man is found lying on the old pine floor of the beloved bistro and antiques store run by Olivier and his partner, Gabri. No one has ever seen the man before - or admits to having seen him - until a mysterious cabin, filled with priceless treasures, is uncovered deep in the woods. Clearly the hermit must have lived there and died there, and someone has been bringing him fresh groceries - in exchange for what? And just how did Olivier make such a spectacular success of his antiques business. Chief Inspector Gamache and his team are called in, and much as they personally like the man who has hosted so many wonderful meals, they must ask the uncomfortable questions. Meanwhile, the cabin yields up extraordinary pieces of evidence - from signed first editions of Charlotte's Web and Jane Eyre to a spider web with the word "WOE" woven in it - that will send Gamache to the remote Queen Charlotte Islands in search of the hermit's secrets, then back to Three Pines to confront the brutal truth. With a deft hand and a melodic voice, Penny captures the dark terrain that can lie beneath even the most beautiful of settings. The Brutal Telling is another milestone for a talented writer whose legions of fans continue to grow. (from publicity material sent with the book)

About the author: LOUISE PENNY’s first Armand Gamache mystery, Still Life, won the New Blood Dagger, Arthur Ellis, Barry, Anthony, and Dilys awards; her second, A Fatal Grace, won the 2007 Agatha Award for Best Novel; and her third, The Cruelest Month, was #1 on the hardcover IMBA bestseller list in March 2008, and her fourth, A Rule Against Murder, was a New York Times bestseller. She lives in a small village south of Montreal. (from Amazon)

About the book: The sleepy town of Newbury, Connecticut, is shocked when a little girl is found brutally murdered. The town's top detective, perplexed by a complete lack of leads, calls in FBI agent Leia Bines, an expert in cases involving children.

Meanwhile, Dr. Peter Gram, a psychiatrist at Newbury's hospital, searches desperately for the cause of seven-year-old Naya Hasting's devastating nightmares. Afraid that she might hurt herself in the midst of a torturous episode, Naya's parents have turned to the bright young doctor as their only hope.

The situations confronting Leia and Peter converge when Naya begins drawing chilling images of murder after being bombarded by the disturbing images in her dreams. Amazingly, her sketches are the only clues to the crime that has panicked Newbury residents. Against her better judgment, Leia explores the clues in Naya's crude drawings, only to set off an alarming chain of events.

In this stunning psychological thriller, innocence gives way to evil, and trust lies forgotten in a web of deceit, fear, and murder.

ARC Arrival: South of Broad

South of Broad by Pat Conroy

Publisher: Nan A. Talese

I received this book from the publisher through Shelf Awareness.

About the book: Against the sumptuous backdrop of Charleston, South Carolina, South of Broad gathers a unique cast of sinners and saints. Leopold Bloom King, our narrator, is the son of an amiable, loving father who teaches science at the local high school. His mother, an ex-nun, is the high school principal and a respected Joyce Scholar. After Leo's older brother commits suicide at the age of ten, the family struggles with the shattering effects of his death, and Leo, lonely and isolated, searches for something to sustain him. Eventually, he finds his answer when he becomes part of a tightly knit group of high school seniors that includes friends Sheba and Trevor Poe, glamorous twins with an alcoholic mother and a prison-escape father; hardscrabble mountain runaways Niles and Starla Whitehead; socialite Molly Huger and her boyfriend, Chadworth Rutledge X - and an ever-widening circle whose liaisons will ripple across two decades, from 1960s counterculture through the dawn of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s.

The ties among them endure for years, surviving marriages happy and troubled, unrequited loves and unspoken longings, hard-won successes and devastating breakdowns, as well as Charleston's dark legacy of racism and class divisions. But the final test of friendship that brings them to San Francisco is something no one is prepared for.
